Yikes. The defense stops the run, but gives up a lot of passing yards. In the previous three games, the Bucs' secondary was playing great. Then it reverted to something we saw long ago. It was game 6 against Washington. Here is what transpired for the Washington game for comparison:

Comparisons between the two games are eerie. In the Washington game, the Redskins scored on four consecutive offensive possessions starting from the second half. Let us inspect if a pattern continues.

Viewing the Drive chart above, we notice the Colts did score on its four consecutive offensive drives in the second half. On drive seven, the 15 yard drive defense, K Conner Barth missed a 54 yard field goal attempt and LG Logan Mankins had a personal unsportsmanlike conduct called against him for an additional 15 yards. The penalty helped start the Colts at the Tampa 41 yard line.

Indianapolis was driving on the defense in the first half. They continued to drive on the defense in the second half. The Bucs' defense only forced one punt when there was less than four minutes left in the game and a 13 point lead.

Drives with completed passes 10 yards or more:

Drive 1: 11 yds Total: 1. Result: FG

Drive 2: 22 yds, 29 yds Total: 2. Result: FG

Drive 3: 22 yds Total: 1. Result: Punt

Drive 4: 17 yds, 10 yds Total: 2. Result: End of half

Drive 5: 31 yds, 16 yds Total: 2. Result: FG

Drive 6: 31 yds, 19 yds Total: 2. Result: TD

Drive 8: 13 yds, 12 yds, 16 yds Total: 3. Result: TD

There was a total of 13 completed passes of 10 yards or more by the Colts offense. Out of 26 completed passes, half of them were 10 yards or more. Ouch.

Out of the first eight Colts' offensive possessions, they scored on 6 opportunities. The last two drives were simply running the clock out. It seems as though the secondary reverted back to being lost in their own defensive schemes once again. Instead of playing a sound game like previous games, it seems as though the defense tried to be fancy and befuddled themselves in executing it.

And here we notice the trend of allowing more points in the second half resurfacing. The defense allowed 19 points in the second half alone. In the Philly game, the score was 28 - 14 at the half. Philly's offense only seen the field in the third quarter once, after the offense put the team up 35 - 14.

I hate to say this, but if the offense cannot score, then team will lose more often because the defense is not responsible enough to prevent the opposing team from scoring.

Coming off its best offensive output, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offense came to halt against the Indianapolis Colts. Although the Tampa Bay offense only scored 12 points in the game and was officially in the Red Zone once, it was actually one yard away from being in the Red Zone twice. In and adjacent to the Red Zone, the offense was 1 for 3. Bad habits rearing its head again as the lack of protection in the pass and run game have resurfaced. Despite the numerous penalties called, the Bucs still had chances to score, but did not execute well. All the little things not done well have disastrous effects.

The Bucs' offense was stymied by Indy's 29th ranked passing defense and 21st rushing defense. Now, we have possibilities why this occurred: Indy's defense has vastly improved or the Bucs' offense did not execute things well.

A tale of two halves can best describe this game. In the first half, the Bucs' offense was able to move the ball well and scored on every possession. The second half is a completely different story.

First half drive summary:

Drive 1: Starting at: TB 20; Ending at: Indy 20. Third down conversion: 1 for 2. Red Zone: No. Result: FG. Comment: Early in the drive on a 2nd and 11, Winston throws the ball out of bounds to WR VJax, but missed the underneath WR. Winston is looking for the big play. Later in the drive on 3rd and 6 from Indy 20 yard line, Winston misses deep to Evans in the end zone - possible bad play call because middle of the defense was wide open. Time of Possession: 5:23.

Drive 2: Starting at: TB 20; Ending at: Indy 12. Third down conversion: 3 for 4. Red Zone: Yes. Result: FG. Comment: On 2nd and goal from Indy 2 yard line, RB Martin's TD run was negated by a suspect holding penalty. Winston gets pressured on 3rd and goal from Indy 12 yard line and throws it short to WR Humphries in the end zone. Time of Possession: 7:06.

Drive 3: Starting at: TB 24; Ending at: End Zone (from Indy 20). Third down conversion: 1 for 1. Red Zone: no. Result: TD. Comment: Martin had his 56 yard scamper on 1st and 20 from TB 14 yard line. 20 yard TD pass to TE Brate reveals Winston looking for the big play. Time of Possession: 2:40.

Although the Bucs' offense went 0 for 1 in the Red Zone, their first and third drives had the ball at the Indy 20 yard line. The Red Zone is inside the 20 yard line; it does not count being on the 20 yard line. Instead of possibly coming out with an optimum of 21 points, the Bucs offense came away with only 12 points, including K Barth's first extra point miss in his whole career.

What stands out the most in the first half is the 3rd down conversion rate: 5 for 7. In the second half, the 3rd down conversion rate was 1 for 6. The total time of possession in the first half was 15:09 out of 30 minutes of play. For the second half, the Bucs had 12:26 out of 30 minutes. They also lost the run game in the second half by gaining only 38 yards compared to the 94 yards earned in the first half.

The first two drives in the second half had two things in common: 3rd and super long as well as failed screen passes. In drive 4, the officials decided to impose their will by calling a holding call on WR Vjax because Vjax owned that block as he sealed his man. Winston tried to get all 20 yards on first down, but it did not work out. The ensuing play was a screen to RB Martin, but the blocking was not there down field. For the fifth drive, on the second play, the Winston could have been sacked from three directions: RB Martin did a terrible job on his chip job on the blitzer, RT Cherilus had his guy in the back field, and LT Smith's guy was pushed far back, but still had time to get to Winston. That was a terrible play call or lack of adjustment as all the routes took too long to develop. Winston should have rolled out and thrown the ball away, but he wants to make a big play. The third play was a screen, but the pocket collapsed too fast as Cherilus and Smith could not contain their respective defenders and the ball was thrown prematurely. The blocking down field was there.

On drive six, the 54 yard missed field goal attempt drive, it was 3rd and six from the Indy 36 yard line, Winston hit Evans on a deep route, but Evans dropped the ball that hit him in the belly and both arms. While it was terrible that Evans dropped a first down and possibly more, Winston missed the easy play underneath for a first down with WR Humphries running free and ahead of his defender. Winston went big on third down instead of nickel and diming to push the chains for another set of downs, especially when the team was behind. Two plays before, Winston went deep to WR Evans, but they were not on the same page.

Drive seven, Winston gets sacked for a six yard loss on 2nd and 5 at the Tampa 46 yard line. He had RB Martin open in the flat, but was looking down for more. But on 2nd and 3rd down, the offensive line did a terrible job on pass protection as he was sacked on 3rd down, resulting in a punt for that drive.

Then on drive eight, everything looked promising. The refs missed a defensive pass interference by hitting TE Stocker before the ball got there, but the very next play Winston hit TE Brate for 8 yards. 3rd and 2 on the Indy 28 yard line. Winston again went big trying to hit WR Vjax on the seam when there were WRs open in the flat for a first down. On 4th and 2, there were two slant patterns that Winston could have attempted, instead he tries to thread it between a safety and underneath defender to TE Brate. Unfortunately, he threw it behind him.

For drive nine, Rainey did a terrible job fielding a punt. The ball dropped on the 30 yard line and bounced back to the 18 yard line. On 1st and 10, Winston overthrew a wide open Evans deep as Evans had broke away from two defenders. Two plays later, Winston went big again by trying to fit a throw to WR Vjax into a soft window behind the linebackers and in front of the safeties. The ball sailed and was intercepted. Winston had time and was not bothered on that pass.

Trying to be the man and go big cost Winston on the events he could control. Winston was the big cat last week and deserved all the praise. This week, he should have followed old man Hasselbeck's lead and take what the defense gives you. The huge win also got to the offensive line's hubris as it slacked in pass protection and run blocking.

The lack of continuing to run in the second half was hampered by the Colt's offense not being stopped on its four drives in the second half. Offensively, the team panicked. But the 7 minute drive by the Colts in the fourth quarter that put them up by 13 points negated any real chance to run. From the chart above, remove the longest run and you can find a pattern from other games.

Execution and taking what the defense is giving you to move the chains is what hurt the offense from producing. If they would have produced 21 points in the first half, then the offense could have continued to run the ball and probably had more success. Even then, the offense could have produced more in the second half as it did have two long drives that resulted in not much.

The Tamp Bay Buccaneers lost to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, which means former Bucs defensive end Stephen White is back to analyze what went wrong. He took to Twitter to explain what happened, and you can find the Storify of his Tweets below.

My main takeaways:

The officiating was awful, but the Bucs need to stop jumping offside as well.

The offensive line was awful, and Kendall Langford beat Evan Smith and Logan Mankins. A lot. Donovan Smith got abused by Robert Mathis and Trent Cole.

The Bucs again didn't help Gerald McCoy or the pass rush much with their scheme.

Jude Adjei-Barimah wasn't as bad as he seemed, the Bucs just gave away the design of their coverage before the snap with Alterraun Verner's alignment, and against Cover 3 those out routes are always open.

The big plays the Colts got against the Bucs came against a really weird and poorly-designed coverage that just put the defenders in a bind.

Jameis Winston was under pressure against the Indianapolis Colts in a way he really hadn't been all season long. He was sacked a season-high five times, against a team that had recorded just 14 sacks on the year. The Bucs themselves had given up just 17 sacks prior to that game.

It was, ultimately, a case of Tampa Bay's talent deficiencies along the offensive line finally catching up with them. As I argued last week, one major reason the Bucs' offensive line has looked good this year is that the Bucs have done a very good job of compensating for their mistakes, both through individual play on the part of Jameis Winston and Doug Martin, and through scheme adjustments. The line is better than it was last year -- how could it not be -- but it's no dominant unit.

The biggest problem with the Bucs offensive line right now is Donovan Smith. The Bucs coaches keep praising him, but the tape doesn't lie: he gets beat too often every week. According to Pro Football Focus, he allowed seven pressures against the Colts. He hasn't allowed a lot of sacks, but that has more to do with Winston's play and other circumstances than his personal performance.

All of that's not unexpected given the fact that he's a second-round rookie and there has definitely been improvement, but he's also a liability for the offense right now. We'll have to wait and see whether that gets better the rest of the season, or next year -- but he's far from a surefire, reliable starter.

Smith wasn't the only Bucs offensive lineman to struggle this week. In fact, every lineman with the exception of Logan Mankins was a liability for most of the game, like Evan Smith below. Ali Marpet can't come back soon enough.

That was no exception. As the game wore on, it seemed like at least one individual lineman got beat on every single snap, and that led to some ridiculous situations for Jameis Winston -- and it started to affect the way he reacted to pressure as well. Over the past month he's gotten better and better at staying calm, finding the open receiver and getting the ball off under pressure, whereas earlier in the season he was often scrambling too quickly and overreacting to pass rushers.

That's what happens there, with Doug Martin getting beat in pass protection on the blitz. The Colts consistently blitzed the Bucs, confident that at least one blocker would lose a one-on-one. In this case the pressure is real, but Winston makes it worse by trying to improvise and spin his way out of trouble, rather than staying within the design of the play -- or throwing the ball away. Those plays became more frequent as the game continued, as did errant throws.

It's easy to forget given the good job the Bucs have done this year of compensating for their offensive line, but this line is not overly skilled. Logan Mankins has played well over the past month, but is getting up there in age and has had plenty of worrying games over the past three years. Joe Hawley and Evan Smith are both just average starting centers, if that, and Gosder Cherilus is experienced but incredibly inconsistent. Donovan Smith is talented, but has so many technique lapses in every game that it's hard to count on him, and the only player to do consistently well is the currently-injured rookie Ali Marpet.

That's not to say that the line has been a problem this year. Certainly they've done well enough to win a bunch of games, and they were rarely the main cause of any loss. At the same time, they haven't exactly led the team to wins, either. It's a mediocre offensive line -- not quite bad enough to be a liability, except in games like this.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost a winnable game against the Indianapolis Colts after leading 12-6 at the half. The first-half lead was built on the back of Doug Martin, who rushed for 90 yards on just 12 carries. It was surprising, then, that he only ran the ball twice for five yards in the second half.

Obviously, much has been made of Martin's failure to get carries in the second half. Lovie Smith himself said yesterday on the Buccaneers Radio Network that he "would have run Doug more," per JoeBucsFan. That's a curious response, given that the Bucs' failure to run him wasn't due to any real decision by the Bucs but a logical result of game circumstances.

To see why, we only need to look at the sequence of plays in the second half. The Bucs ran the ball on the very first play of the second half, but saw that nullified by a very iffy holding penalty on Vincent Jackson. The result was first-and-20, a situation where running the ball for five yards isn't likely to do much. An incomplete pass to Martin gave them 2nd-and-20, and another down where they weren't going to pass. Third down failed and the Bucs had to pass. Officially, that goes down as zero carries on the drive -- but not for a lack of trying.

On their second drive, the Bucs again came out running the ball on first down for two yards. But Winston got sacked and lost ten yards on second down, setting up a third-and-18 failure again to Doug Martin and another punt. It wasn't until the Bucs' third drive that they really got a chance to run the ball, but they went to Charles Sims instead of the Dougernaut. That's standard operating procedure for the Bucs, though: every couple of drives, Sims gets to be the regular back. The drive stalled in field goal range when Winston missed Evans deep and the receiver then dropped a sure touchdown on a three-down series where the Bucs didn't run the ball, perhaps the only time they could have run the ball more. But even there they had the Colts defense beat, and poor execution was the only thing standing in the way of a touchdown.

On their third drive of the half, the Bucs started out with a big pass to Vincent Jackson and a Doug Martin run, but a sack on a second-down play produced third-and-long and another sack. Once they got the ball back there was only 5:53 left in the game and the Bucs needed to score two touchdowns quickly to have a chance of winning the game. At that point, Martin wasn't going to get any carries regardless of what happened.

In all, Martin got three carries in the second half, one of them nullified by penalty. That's not much compared to the 13 (one nullified) he got in the first half, but the discrepancy was more the result of circumstance than any oversight on the Bucs' part. Sometimes, games just go a certain way. Giving Martin one or two more carries likely wouldn't have done much, given the consistent run blitzes the Colts were sending, and there was never a realistic opportunity for more than five carries in the half.

The Bucs ultimately lost because their secondary couldn't stop Matt Hasselbeck's quick passing game, and pass protection couldn't handle the relentless pressure the Colts were sending Jameis Winston's way. Martin's absence looks bad, but it was more a consequence of the team's second-half struggles than a cause.

The young football team learned how to win, now they need to learn how to handle success.

Watching a young team grow up can be mighty frustrating huh, Buc Fans? Just when you think the corner is turned and this team's about to take off - FLOP. Just as the national media was taking notice of our dirty little secret down here in Tampa - CLUNK. It felt like everything gained the last few weeks was lost in one shoddy played ballgame in Indianapolis.

The good news? Its all still there for the Bucs - The chase for the playoffs - The continuing rapid improvement of a team no one thought much of at the beginning of the season. The bad news? Its a lot harder now.

- The Bucs weren't eliminated from the playoffs on Sunday. They didn't even take a conference loss. No, what the Bucs lost yesterday was control of their fate. Had the Bucs run the table, Tampa Bay wouldn't have to worry about tie-breakers. They owned the tie-breaker with Seattle (conference record), would've swept the Falcons owning the head-to-head tie-breaker and everyone else would have been a game back.

Now, the Bucs need help. They need Seattle to lose one of their final 5. They need either the Washington Franchise or The Giants to fade away and perhaps most importantly they need to win some ballgames - especially next week. The loss has made the Falcons game a must win for any playoff hopes.

- As much as I've lauded the offensive line this season, yesterday was a horrific performance. I don't know if Dononvan Smith suddenly hit the rookie wall on Sunday or if this was something that has been coming for the inconsistent young rookie left tackle but he had his worst game as a Pro on Sunday. Smith got his QB brutalized, surrendering a sack, a QB hit and 5 hurries on the day. He wasn't alone though, as Joe Hawley and Evan Smith both struggled as well against a very pedestrian Colts pass rush (only 14 sacks on the season coming into the game).

The result was Jameis hurrying throws and maybe for the first time in his young NFL career feeling the rush before it actually got there. He still put up decent numbers, 20 of 36 for 245 yds and a beautiful look-off the safety TD laser to Brate the Great.

The running game still churned out 132 yds. But five sacks and 12 QB hits is unacceptable.

- I don't understand what the Bucs were doing on defense Sunday. The past few games, Tampa Bay has been effective in playing man-to-man with Jude Adjei-Barimah and Sterling Moore and bringing a variety of blitz packages. The few times they did it on Sunday, they forced the 40-year old wonder Matt Hasselbeck into quicker decisions that resulted in positive results.

Instead, Tampa Bay decided to use some confounding zone scheme (confounding for the Bucs, not the Colts) and it resulted in some shoddy pass defense that reminded us of the bad Bucs D of earlier in the season.

The odd thing is - it wasn't even Tampa Two. I honestly don't know what the hell it was. In T2 or even basic Cover 2, the middle linebacker darts back to cover the deep middle, the other two get their lower middle, the corner passes off the outside receiver to the safety in deep coverage and covers anything coming out of the flat.

On many of the big passing plays, the corners played it like Tampa/Cover 2 - but no one else did. On T.Y. Hilton's touchdown, Moore did as he has been trained to do, passing off the receiver and covering his responsibility, but then Bradley McDougald inexplicably went to the center of the field instead of picking up Hilton and it allowed for a easy touchdown. You could say, "Well, that's just a blown coverage." Only, the exact same thing happened a play earlier on a Donte Moncrief 31 yard reception that got the Colts in striking distance.

Did Moore not know the Bucs were playing something other than Tampa Two? Or did McDougald not play his responsibility? Either way, it was something the Colts feasted on all day.

When the Bucs did finally get aggressive in the fourth quarter, the savvy veteran Hasselbeck identified that Adjei-Barimah could not handle either Hilton or Moncrief one-on-one and abused the young rookie free agent.

Did the Bucs give him safety help? Nope. They just let the kid twist in the wind. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

The Bucs only hope was getting pressure on Hasselbeck and they were able to bring him down 3 times. They also hit him 11 more. Unfortunately, the old gunslinger handled the pressure better than Jameis did.

- Now, I'm not a guy who blames the refs or believe in the "Great Anti-Buccaneer Conspiracy" as some do. I think the officiating in the NFL sucks for both teams, not just Tampa Bay. Yet Walt Coleman's crew had a terrible day. Three crucial misfires went againt the Bucs on Sunday and really changed the course of this football game.

Mind you, these all occurred on the same drive in the fourth quarter with the Bucs trailing 19-12. First - The Bucs stripped the Colts TE Whalen, recovered and returned it to the Colts 23 yard line. Tack on a horse collar personal foul and the Bucs would have been point blank first and goal.

Only there was a defensive holding call on Alterraun Verner that made the calls off-set. No play. No turnover. Folks, I've watched the tape of this play over and over and for the life of me I can't see it. Verner did place his hand on the receiver but in no way grabbed a jersey or impedded his progress.

Second play - The Bucs finally stopped the Colts and Indy had to settle for a field goal. Chris Conte narrowly missed blocking the kick. Only...Conte is called for leaping. Automatic first down at the Tampa Bay 6 yard line. The problem is the rule says says you can't leap, land on player to try and get leverage to block a kick. Conte leaped, but cleared everyone - didn't touch a soul - and it set the Colts point blank range. It can be argued that the Colts would have gotten a first down anyway because Conte roughed the holder but that wasn't called on the field. Bottom line, it shouldn't have been a penalty.

Third and Final play - the Bucs forced a fumble by Ahmad Bradshaw at the 6 yard line. At first look, it appeared Bradshaw was down but on closer examination, only the back of Bradshaw's hand comes in contact with the turf before the ball comes out. According to the former head of officiating Mike Periera, that doesn't constitute being down by contact - it should have been a fumble.

The Colts scored the game sealing touchdown a play later.

- There were other WTF calls during the game but there were also some terrible penalties by Buccaneer veterans that simply shouldn't happen. Bottom line - you can't beat a quality football team on the road committing 12 penalties for 95 yards. Many of the penalties put the Bucs off schedule or outright cost the Bucs points (for and against).

- Speaking of points left on the field. Tampa Bay left 15 points on the field Sunday. They lost 4 points (assuming Barth made the extra point) after a Doug Martin touchdown was called back on an obvious holding penalty on Kevin Pamphile. Barth cost them 4 points with a missed extra point and field goal (although in his defense, the field goal was from 54 yards out). Then there was the dropped pass from Mike Evans that likely would have resulted in a Bucs touchdown or Tampa Bay being in point blank range. You can't win on the road if you screw yourself out of points.

- I think this game showed us the true nature of the Buccaneers. No, I'm not saying this is a bad football team. Not at all. I'm saying this is a young football team still trying to learn how to win in this league. We all would love to see the Bucs seize their opportunity and make a strong push for the playoffs. Perhaps we're asking a bit too much of this team. They need to learn how to handle success just as much as they need to learn how to deal with failure. This was their first taste of success. When ESPN does shots from One Buc Palace, when Fox and NFL Network want to interview you. When you're hearing on all the networks how the Bucs are a contender (and for some even a favorite) for one of the last playoff spots.

They didn't come out with the same fire and intensity we've seen from them in recent weeks and I think it bit them in the backside. This loss might have been a good thing for them. Yes, it hurt them in the standings but it also showed them they haven't arrived yet. If they continue to commit idiotic penalties or blow assignments, yes, they can still get their asses kicked.

The good news is this isn't a conference loss and the Bucs got some help this weekend. It's all still there for Tampa Bay. Beat Atlanta and you're one step closer. Beat Atlanta and get a little more help, the Bucs may be exactly where they hope to be. Just beat Atlanta.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost to the Indianapolis Colts, so let's take to the official play counts to see what they can tell us about the Bucs' strategies. There aren't a lot of remarkable things -- the Bucs have settled into a starting group that takes the vast majority of the snaps on both sides of the ball -- but there are still a few curious decisions on playing time this week.

Not a lot of help for the offensive line

Four special teams snaps. That's all she wrote for Demar Dotson this week, as was the case in the past few weeks. He's not even getting a toehold as a sixth lineman, with those plays reserved for Kevin Pamphile. Speaking of: the Bucs only had five plays with Kevin Pamphile on the field this week, a massive drop compared to previous weeks when he was on the field for ten or more plays per game. That won't have helped the team's pass protection struggles.

Gerald McCoy getting less playing time

This is a curious decision: Gerald McCoy played just 66% of the defensive snaps this week. That's still more than any other defensive tackle, but he's generally played close to 90% of the snaps this year -- he's played 78.6% of the defensive snaps on the season. The decision to limit his playing time a little this week is weird, given that he's actually fully healthy and visibly more disruptive now, recording 2.5 sacks the past two games. The Bucs don't have a lot of depth at defensive tackle, either. Henry Melton showed up a few times as his backup and Akeem Spence has played well, but keeping your best defensive player on the sidelines for a third of the plays seems like a bad decision.

The rise of Cameron Brate

Brate has firmly entrenched himself as the team's number one tight end at this point. Luke Stocker's officially the starter with Austin Seferian-Jenkins injured, but he's a blocker only. Brate played 61% of the offensive snaps this week, more than any skill position player not named Mike Evans or Vincent Jackson. He's doing so at the expense of Brandon Myers, who had just 10 snaps and has been a non-factor all season long. Brate, on the other hand, has become increasingly productive and put up five catches for 53 yards against the Colts. He'll lose his place when Seferian-Jenkins returns, but he's a useful and reliable weapon who should continue to get some playing time.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost to the Indianapolis Colts earlier today. Here are your winners and losers for the game.

Winners

Vincent Jackson

Jackson's roster spot for next year is in doubt. Not because he's not a good player anymore, but because he's set to make nearly $10 million in 2016 and the Bucs could figure to spend that money better elsewhere. But with every game like this, Jackson improves his chances of staying on the roster. He had a solid four catches for 76 yards, including a beautiful toe-tapping catch and a big catch-and-run on a scramble drill.

Cameron Brate

With Austin Seferian-Jenkins still not cleared for contact, Brate is getting more and more opportunities as a receiving tight end. The former Harvard player caught five passes for 53 yards and his third career touchdown, after putting up three catches for 47 yards and a touchdown against the Eagles last week. He's not as explosive as Seferian-Jenkins and is mostly just a receiving tight end, but he's turning into a nice, reliable option for Winston -- especially on seam routes.

Doug Martin

The Dougernaut had 12 carries for 90 yards in the first half, despite the Colts wreaking havoc with the Bucs' blocking schemes. Game scripts largely caused him to disappear in the second half, as he had just two carries for seven more yards and saw a touchdown called back for an iffy holding call. But overall, this was another steady game for a back who's quickly turning into a must-re-sign for the Bucs.

Losers

Offensive line

The Bucs have been compensating for personnel deficiencies along the offensive line all season long, and it finally caught up with them this time. Jameis Winston was sacked five times as the Colts sent blitz after blitz after blitz, and several linemen repeatedly failed to win their one-on-one matchups. Donovan Smith looked particularly vulnerable at left tackle, and the Bucs for some reason did not give him a lot of help, despite consistently doing so the rest of the year. Joe Hawley and Evan Smith struggled as well, and the Bucs will be much-improved in this area when Ali Marpet returns from injury.

The refs

Usually I'm not one for complaining about referees. Bad calls are going to happen, and they're going to go both ways. But this time, the Bucs were genuinely victimized by some horrendous calls. The refs turned what was clearly a false start on the Colts into a neutral zone infraction on the Bucs, and then turned what was clearly defensive pass interference on Mike Evans into offensive pass interference on his part. They seemed to make a third terrible ruling on a Mike Evans catch, but quickly corrected themselves.

Instead of keeping it to those two bad calls, they then called phantom holding on Vincent Jackson to stifle the Bucs' first drive of the second half, and a phantom defensive holding penalty to negate a forced and recovered fumble for the Bucs on the Colts' second touchdown drive. They also made a terrible leaping call on Chris Conte on a fourth-quarter field goal, though he could have been flagged for roughing the holder, giving the Colts a second chance at scoring a touchdown. They then could have given the Bucs the ball on a close maybe-fumble at the goal-line, but instead ruled that Ahmad Bradshaw was down.

A few bad calls are normal, but this was a cascade of absolutely terrible calls.

Secondary

The Bucs' secondary had played some good football the past three games, but they came back down to earth against the Indianapolis Colts. Matt Hasselbeck sliced them up for 315 yards on 42 attempts, getting two touchdowns and looking especially unstoppable in the second half. Donte Moncrief ate up undrafted rooie Jude Adjei-Barimah in the fourth quarter, ending the game with eight catches for 114 yards, and a pair of T.Y. Hilton catches in the third quarter looked to be on Sterling Moore and Bradley McDougald as they left some gaping holes in coverage. It didn't help that this was the first game the Bucs had not produced a takeaway since week 10 of last season.

This just underscores what we already knew: the Bucs don't have enough talent in the defensive secondary. That's something they're going to have to fix this offseason.

Connor Barth

A missed field goal and the first missed extra point of his career. He also failed to produce a single touchback on four kickoffs, though they were deep and long enough to prevent big returns. Not the best game of his career.

Mike Evans

Five catches for 64 yards was a decent game, and he was open deep a couple of times but Jameis Winston couldn't connect, in part because of relentless pressure. But after catching every catchable ball last week, Evans had a massive drop on what would likely have been a touchdown in the third quarter. That wasn't characteristic of the rest of the game, but that one catch could have turned this loss into a win.
