Buccaneers fans react to the selection of Joe Tryon

At number 32 overall in the first round of the NFL Draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could do literally anything they wanted to. Pass rush, offensive line, safety - there was very little they could do that you couldn’t make a reasonable argument for. In the end, it was the edge rusher out of Washington - Joe Tryon - that they went with.

As always, Bucs fans had reactions to the selection and I was pleasantly surprised to see the overwhelming majority like the pick. Although Pro Football Focus had Tryon ranked in the 80’s for their overall prospect big board, NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah had Tryon 33rd overall while Bucky Brooks had him listed as the fourth best edge rusher.

We took to Twitter to get an idea as to how Bucs fans felt about it - after a good night’s rest since the pick wasn’t made until after midnight - and here’s how things went;

Of course, others weren’t so thrilled. Whether it was because there was a player available that they liked better or they wanted someone from their favorite team or a different position altogether, there are always a few people out there that aren’t happy;

Yes, there was other talent out there. Alabama’s Christian Barmore could have provided depth along the defensive line. Georgia’s Azeez Ojulari was another edge rusher out there. TCU’s Trevon Moehrig would have helped the back end of the defense as safety help. I was actually hoping for Notre Dame linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, but understood that he wasn’t exactly a great fit for the team as far as first round picks were concerned.

There’s a lot of talent still on the board heading into day two and a lot of players whose names we expected to hear last night still waiting for their lifelong dream to come true. For Joe Tryon, his dream became a reality right after the clock struck midnight to send him into his 22nd birthday with the most surreal gift of all time. Every player this weekend that the Bucs draft is a depth piece, building towards the future. Not everyone can get exactly what they want, but Jason Licht has earned the trust of the collective to get the right guy. There were plenty of people upset about the selections of Vita Vea and Devin White and those have worked out just fine.

Trust the process, trust the staff. If you wanted offensive line or secondary depth, there’s still time and talent ahead. For now, adding an explosive athletic edge rusher with a high ceiling is exactly what this team was looking for. He can impact the game in situations this year while refining his skills by working with Shaquil Barrett and Jason Pierre-Paul.
