2019 NFL Draft Results: Buccaneers Select S Mike Edwards

Bucs continue to revamp the back half of their defense with the pick of Safety Mike Edwards

NCAA Football: Mississippi State at Kentucky Mark Zerof-USA TODAY Sports

After three straight defensive picks, the Buccaneers went with their fourth of the draft selecting Safety Mike Edwards out of Kentucky.

Edwards was a three year starter for the Wildcats, finishing his career with 317 tackles, 21 tackles for loss. 23 passes defensed, 1.5 sacks, ten interceptions, and two touchdowns.

Edwards is a solid cover guy that can slide up to the slot if asked to with great tackling ability. He has solid ball skills and doesn’t have an ounce of fear in his body. With the Bucs really focusing on speed, Edwards comes in a tick slower than some of his draft mates running a 4.5 40-yard dash.

The new regime had reservations about this secondary - especially in the NFC South. Those fears were surely alleviated after using all their day two picks on corners and a safety.
