The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, to many peoples surprise, finally have a deep and well rounded defensive line. The team overhauled the unit this off season, but to me, one big question still remains. What role is William Gholston going to play on this defense?
Gholston is set to make $6.5 million this upcoming season, after the Bucs decided not to cut him back in March. That is a lot of money for someone who is going to be a rotational run stopper at best. I would have liked to see them cut Gholston, and use that $6.5 million for a guy like Bashaud Breeland or Eric Reid. I think the team would be in much better shape if they had one or both of those guys. I just can’t justify paying a rotational defensive end who had zero sacks last season $6.5 million dollars.
Maybe new defensive line coach Brentson Buckner has some magical plan for Gholston, but I can’t see him taking many snaps away from Gerald McCoy, Jason Pierre-Paul, Vinny Curry and new draftee, Vita Vea.
What are your thoughts Bucs fans? What role will William Gholston have with the team?
