Ever since the Buccaneers introduced their new look in 2014, it has been received with many, many mixed reviews.
A lot of the complaints stem from the number font as well as the color combination. There are folks they prefer they bring back the all orange look, while some others just want the pewter off the shoulders. Bottom line, there are a very limited few that like how they look now.
While there is much feedback on the look of the jerseys, the logo seems to escape many debates. A website called FanJuicer.com conducted research on over 1,400 NFL fans to poll their likeness to each team’s logo. The results pinned the Bucs’ logo 17th overall while a graphic designer shed some light on why the logo isn’t all that great.
The Graphic Designer: It definitely has a modern NFL feel to it. There’s good depth and shading, and great implied motion. But there’s still a lot going on here. The skull, the football, and three swords is a lot.
FanJuicer: You’ve talked a lot about implied motion. Is that a common design principle?
The Graphic Designer: No, not really. For me personally, however, in a sports logo having implied motion helps drive home the point. Sports are about movement and action. This logo has that with the angling of the saber and waving of the flag. Some might say this is a little cartoonish, but a lot of the logos I like have cartoonish elements. Lastly, I really like the final gray outline around everything, it would really make this work with white and darker backgrounds.
So there you have it. The logo has good depth and shading. Exactly how I have always described it.
