The running game has been non-existent for some time now and the Buccaneers hope to have addressed help in the NFL Draft. The selection of USC’s Ronald Jones II provides potential optimism out of the backfield but how he’ll be utilized remains to be seen.
Below is a question asked for this week’s mailbag regarding Jones and whether or not he’ll replace Peyton Barber in the starting lineup.
@Bucs_Nation Let’s say ROJO has an “average” preseason, doo you think ROJO will start week one over Barber, despite all the love for Barber, we didn’t draft him in the 2nd to be another Charles sims did we? #WriteTheShip— CHUBB (@SDBowHunter) May 22, 2018
I think it boils down to more than his performance throughout preseason. Can he pick up the offense? How has he graded out in practice? There are many things to consider before immediately labeling him the starter. However, he is not another version of Charles Sims.
Going back to the introduction of this post, it also depends on how the coaches use him. I do feel they will utilize him correctly because he poses a threat to the opposition that Tampa Bay hasn’t had before.
With all that said, Peyton Barber should still get a crack at starting the season first on the depth chart. Will Jones eventually start? Absolutely. But, who starts isn’t truly relevant because there is a likelihood they’ll creatively use each one for certain situations.
Do you think Jones should start?
