Mike Smith and what the Chicago "Anomaly" Says to us all

Did you hear that press conference yesterday? Oh my goodness. If you haven't heard the news, the Chicago game was an anomaly.

In fact, after hearing Mike Smith's uninspiring speech, he's convinced me with his narrative that the fact that Tampa's defense is ranked last in the NFL for two years straight is also an anomaly. The fact that we have had defensive meltdowns every year during his tenure is an anomaly. The fact that our defense hemorrhages more yardage and more TDs than anyone else in the NFL are all anomalies!

How uninspiring!

There were only 4 games in 2016 where this defense was consistently good. THAT was the anomaly, Mr Smith.

Here's what I wish I heard from Mike Smith.

We are going to be known as the defense that puts a halt on this year's NFL air assault! I'm disgusted by how we started this season! There's no excuses. I need to coach better. I need to call better plays.

No. We didn't hear any of that. All we heard was about anomalies. All we heard was about how he didn't care about how fans think of his performance. All we heard was it was business as usual at One Buc Place.

I hear no hope in these words from Mike Smith. No inspiration.

Why is Dirk Koetter allowing this narrative to build. Why is Jason Licht allowing this communication to exist? I thought they were all about building a winning culture.

Four games in and the results say they are all about mediocrity. Good enough perhaps to improve from last year but bad enough to keep us mediocre. Lukewarm. Vanilla. UNINSPIRED.

I remember when Jason Licht and Dirk Koetter talked about performance and competition at every position the year they let Aguayo finish his rookie preseason without competition. I remember posting about it on this site after the second preseason game... please get Aguayo some competition.

I remember Monken this year saying that every week the players are competing for their jobs. Then Chicago happened, reminding us all that Mike Smith hasn't been competing for his play-calling job and scheming job for the last 2 years of being a last placed defense.

How do they expect to hold players accountable when they can't hold themselves accountable?

How do they expect free agents like JPP, Desean Jackson and Vinny Curry to continue wanting to come to Tampa when this organization allows this long of a track record of a lack of accountability amongst each other as coaches and GMs?

Dirk Koetter had the bye week to set things straight with his staff. Make sure they were on the straight and narrow. He didn't. The losing narrative and the uninspiring narrative continues to thrive.

So where's the GM in all of this?

So yeah, uninspired. Very uninspiring. To all of us.
