The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were reportedly interested in Nick Foles as a backup quarterback, but he has re-signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as of this morning. In response, Eagles backup Chase Daniel has requested his release and the Eagles are expected to grant it. All of that per ESPN’s Adam Caplan.
The Bucs saw Mike Glennon sign with the Chicago Bears in free agency, which is why they may or may not be looking for a new backup to Jameis Winston.
Logical expectation: the Bucs could pursue Daniel as their backup quarterback. But the question is how much better than current backup Ryan Griffin he really is. Griffin has zero NFL playing experience, but he does have the physical tools to succeed and has been groomed for two seasons behind Jameis Winston and Mike Glennon.
Daniel, on the other hand, is a pretty run-of-the-mill backup quarterback who has thrown a grand total of 78 NFL passes to very meh results. He has experience, but that experience isn’t all that good, so eh?
We’ll see what happens here. At least we know Foles isn’t coming to Tampa.
