The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have one game left, and then they’ll decide on head coach Dirk Koetter’s future. Or maybe they’ve already decided on it, who knows?
The case against Dirk Koetter is easy: his team is 4-11 and has lost five straight games, in a season that was supposed to be their big break. Few coaches can survive a drop from a 9-7 record to double-digit losses without a history of success, and Koetter has none.
On the other hand, Koetter has a few things going for him. For one, Jameis Winston and the passing offense have been humming in the last few weeks. For two, Koetter did guide the Bucs to a 9-7 record last year. For three, most of the problems this season were caused by the defense and Jameis Winston’s injury—Koetter should have been better prepared for these issues, but he’s not a defensive coach and he doesn’t control injuries. Plus, what’ll getting another coach do to Jameis Winston’s progress?
Those are the succinct cases for and against him. There’s another factor here, though: who can the Bucs get to replace him. Rumors are flying about Jon Gruden, but is he really a savior? He was fired for a reason in 2009. And do you really trust the Glazers to find a better coach, given what happened the previous four times?
So, what do you think? Should the Bucs fire Koetter, or keep him?
