Mike Evans suspended for one game for cheap shot on Marshon Lattimore

The Bucs will have to play one game without their star receiver.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will have to miss wide receiver Mike Evans for one game, as he’s been suspended by the NFL for his hit on New Orleans Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore.

Lattimore shoved Jameis Winston after the Bucs’ quarterback came off the sidelins to harangue him, and Evans reacted to that shove with a somewhat ridiculous blindside shot.

Evans should have been ejected from the game. But a one-game suspension is a bit much: it was a cheap shot, but we see fighting and escalation on the field pretty frequently. Evans overreacted, surely, but far dirtier plays have gone unpunished—and certainly haven’t been punished with a suspension.

What’s done is done, though, and the Bucs will have to adjust. Missing Mike Evans against the New York Jets will hurt, of course, but with Jameis Winston likely out as well, the team would have faced an uphill climb to win that game anyway. I guess that’s a positive, kind of.
