The Buccaneers can play spoiler for the Saints today

If the Saints win, they’re on Super Bowl pace.

The New Orleans Saints are on Super Bowl pace: if they beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers today, they’ll have won six straight games after an 0-2 start. And Trey Wingo figured out that the only other two teams to have done that ridiculously specific thing, went on to to win the Super Bowl.

That means the Bucs can play spoiler: beat the Saints, and the NFC South isn’t quite wide open, and the Atlanta Falcons or Carolina Panthers could take over the division lead quickly, and also the Saints may not win the Super Bowl..

Of course, the Bucs could go for the NFC South title themselves—or at least a wild card playoff spot. But that’s becoming an increasingly unlikely proposition. With a win they’d be 3-5, and they could afford to lose maybe one more game the rest of the way—if that, as even a 10-6 finish is no guarantee for a playoff spot.

Whatever happens, the Bucs play the Saints at 1:00 p.m. today. Here’s your open thread for the game.
