The Tampa Bay Buccaneers play the New Orleans Saints today, as the NFC South is starting to divide itself into haves and have-nots. The Saints are in the haves camp: at 5-2 they lead the division, and they’ve won the past five games thanks to a surprisingly solid defense.
On the other hand, the Bucs are definitely have-nots. They’re last in the division at 2-5, and have lost four straight games. The team that was supposed to take the next step and get to the playoffs is instead experiencing a pretty dramatic collapse—particularly on defense.
Today, though, fortunes could change. One win could start a winning streak for the Bucs, and leave them just two games out of first place in the division. It’s difficult, but not impossible.
For that to happen, the Bucs defense will have to maintain its form from last week, when they put up maybe their best performance of the season in a loss. The Saints have a dominant offense, as usual, and the mediocre Bucs secondary will really need to elevate their game to win.
On the other side, Jameis Winston has had an up-and-down but mostly pretty good season so far, though he’s coming off what was probably the worst performance in his career. If Winston can find the form he displayed the week before, the Bucs should be fine—but they are facing one of the best pass defenses in the NFL today.
