The Tampa Bay Buccaneers play the Carolina Panthers today in what will be Tampa Bay’s first division game of the 2017 season. The 2-4 Bucs desperately need to win this game to maintain a tiny sliver of playoff hopes, while the 4-3 Panthers are trying to win the division.
While both teams appear to be on different trajectories, this should be a competitive game. The Bucs are one-point favorites according to the bookies, while the Panthers have struggled to put together an offense and have lost their last two games. If the Bucs defense can find a spark, they may actually stifle Cam Newton and company.
For that to happen, though, they need a healthier secondary than they’ll get. The Bucs’ top two cornerbacks, Brent Grimes and Robert McClain, are both out with injuries, as is third-stringer and special teams ace Josh Robinson. That leaves the Bucs with extremely little cornerback depth, and a safety group that has been uninspiring this season—not a recipe for success.
On the other hand, Jameis Winston has had a very good season and has a dangerous group of receivers. If he can get that deep ball to DeSean Jackson going, the Bucs can score a lot of points.
