Mike Smith expected to interview for Chargers head coaching position

NFL: Oakland Raiders at Tampa Bay Buccaneers Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The San Diego Chargers are expected to interview Mike Smith in their head coaching search, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. The Chargers fired Mike McCoy after four season in charger, with little to show for it and a 5-11 record this past year.

Mike Smith, who is currently the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive coordinator, is a hot property this offseason. He led the Bucs defense to a much-improved performance, particularly late in the season, and has years of experience as head coach: he led the Atlanta Falcons from 2008 to 2014.

Mike Smith will also interview for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ opening, so the Bucs are likely to lose their prize coordinator this offseason, if not to one team, then to the other. I’d expect a few more teams to jump into the mix, too, though no reports have suggested anything concrete yet.

If Mike Smith does end up leaving, the Bucs are likely to look in-house for a replacement to maintain continuity.
