Wide receiver Cecil Shorts suffered what appeared to be a very serious leg injury against the San Diego Chargers today. After making a third-down catch to convert the team, he had to be carted off with an air-cast around his right leg.
Shorts was immediately announced as out for the game with a knee injury, which indicates how serious the injury is. The veteran played mostly as an injury fill-in this season, and made 10 catches for 138 yards. He started four games in total.
With Shorts out, the Bucs will likely give special teams ace Russell Shepard more playing time at wide receiver, which is not necessarily a bad thing for the Bucs offense given Shepard’s productivity. This does hurt the Bucs’ receiving depth, which was already bad with Vincent Jackson injured reserve. The team has been hit very heavily by injuries this season, making their continued quality play fairly amazing.
Here’s hoping Shorts will do well in his recovery.
