Doug Martin has been suspended for four games for violating the NFL's policy on performance enhancing drugs, the NFL and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced today.
Martin will be entering a treatment facility and released a statement apologizing to the fans and team. There is some overlap between the PED policy and recreational drugs.
“On the field, I must be strong and determined to push through both pain and injuries to become an elite NFL running back," the statement reads in part." Off the field, I have tried that same approach in my personal life. My shortcomings in this area have taught me both that I cannot win these personal battles alone and that there is no shame in asking for help."
Martin was deactivated for last week's game against the New Orleans Saints but that game will not count toward his suspension. He will miss Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers and the first three games of the 2017 season.
