In a surprise move, Noah Spence has been voted the Pepsi Rookie of the Week for his performance against the Seattle Seahawks last week. Spence had 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble, five tackles and several other pressures against Russell Wilson and company.
This comes in the same week that Spence won Defensive Rookie of the Month for his performance in November. Spence has really come on in recent games, after a somewhat slow start to the season. As the defensive end has developed pass-rush moves and figured out how the NFL works, he’s gotten more and more dominant.
That obviously bodes well for the future, and Spence could turn out to be the long-awaited successor to Simeon Rice. The Bucs haven’t had a single player with more than 10 sacks in a season since Rice left a decade ago. Obviously it’s a little early to anoint Spence, but early signs are positive.
