Buccaneers beat the Panthers because they didn't turn it over

Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won their second game in five attempts. Although they only put up 17 points, it is what they did not put up that matters the most -€” they did not put a notch in the turnover department.

Recall, here are Coach Koetter's Top 4 Metrics (T4M) for winning the offensive game:

1.       Turnovers

2.       Creating Explosive Plays

3.       Reduce getting sacked

4.       Be great on third downs

We will re-visit the T4M later in the article as we will immerse ourselves into the Offensive Drive Stats.

1st Quarter Report

Game 5 vs Carolina

Carolina Defense vs Bucs Offense

11 10 52 Missed FG 1
12 11 66 FG 1 3 1 1
Total 12 74 325 4 17 0 2 1 1 0 4

The offense produced four long drives of 40 yards or more, but managed to score a pittance when you take into context that the offense was in the Red Zone four times! The scoring could have been made to look slightly better if K Roberto Aguayo had not miss any FG attempts, which would have resulted in an additional six more points. The possible total could have been 23 points. But I will still denote how abysmal the offense is in the Red Zone.

Run Game

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Rushing
Game 5, vs Carolina
Pos Player Carries Yards Avg TD Long
RB Rodgers 30 101 3.4 0 13
RB Barber 3 6 2.0 0 3
RB Winston 4 6 1.5 0 6

This game is the first game the Bucs had a rusher to earn over 100 yards. Rodgers' effective run game helps to run time off the clock. The Bucs won the time of possession advantage of 34 minutes to 26 minutes.

A time of possession win, in this particular game, tremendously helped out the defense as it gave the opposing offense fewer opportunities to score.

QB Stats

Winston went 18/30 (60%), 219 yards, 1 TD, 0 INTs, and 2 sacks. The most impressive stat was zero turnovers by Winston.

Turnovers

TB Bucs
2016 TO:Pts; TO:Long Drives
Turnovers
Team Points 40+ yard Drives Total INT W/L
Atl 31 4 1 1 W
Ari 7 2 5 4 L
LA 26 7 2 1 L
Den 7 1 3 2 L
Car 17 4 0 0 W

The fewer turnovers the more chances you give your team the opportunity to win. This small sample does prove one of Koetter's T4M.

Explosive Plays

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Explosive Plays
Game 5, Carolina
Drive Run (12+ yards) Pass (16+ yards) Drive Result
1 Vjax, 17 FG
2 Rodgers, 13 Punt
4 Evans, 17 FG
7 Brate, 38
Evans, 26 TD
10 Evans, 16 Missed FG

Out of the five drives with an explosive play, only one did not lead to a scoring opportunity.

Team Stats

Turnovers:                          0 turnovers

3rd down efficiency:       6 out of 15 (40%)

Red Zone efficiency:      0 out of 4 (0.00%)

Passing:                               202 yards

Rushing:                              113 yards  (3.1 yards per attempt)

Conclusion

Koetter's T4M

1.       Turnovers................................ 0

2.       Creating Explosive Plays........ 6

3.       Reduce getting sacked........... 2

4.       Be great on third downs......... 40%

Three out of the four metrics helped secure the win, especially the turnover metric. A big applause goes to the defense because the Bucs won scoring only a meager 17 points.
