Buccaneers promote Freddie Martino, waive Donteea Dye again

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have promoted wide receiver Freddie Martino to the 53-man roster, again, and waived wide receiver Donteea Dye, also again. Dye was promoted to the roster earlier this week to replace Vincent Jackson, who went on injured reserve with an ACL injury.

This is a weird move that suggests the Bucs simply messed up when they promoted Donteea Dye earlier this week. Koetter said on Friday that Dye wasn’t fit enough to play, which, well, why’d you promote him then? Practice squad players are in the building, nothing should have changed in Dye’s fitness between Monday and Friday.

Martino was on the Bucs’ roster earlier this season, playing in two games as a special teamer only. He’s likely on the roster as an emergency measure, and is unlikely to get on the field on Sunday. Cecil Shorts will start opposite Mike Evans, with Adam Humphries playing in the slot and special teamer Russell Shepard as another option with some experience.
