Roberto Aguayo won the Clutch Performer of the Week award for his game-winning field goal against the Carolina Panthers on Monday Night.
The irony is, of course, that Aguayo also missed two field goals in that game. But the last one counted and it was pretty clutch, so there’s that. Hurray for the Panthers forcing Dirk Koetter to try to win the game with their timeouts, and Aguayo then actually doing so.
One interesting thing about the clutchness is that it is often associated with mental toughness or stoicism, rather than luck — and Aguayo’s failure to be accurate so far has also been attributed to some kind of nervousness. So is Aguayo mentally tough and clutch, or is he having some mental issues that are causing him to miss kicks and he just got lucky that one time? Who knows!
Whatever it is, I hope he gets to kick a whole lot of game-winning field goals for the Bucs. And, perhaps, a bunch that aren’t game-winning. Because we need those, too.
