The San Francisco 49ers interviewed Dirk Koetter today for their head coaching position today, first reported by Matt Barrows and then confirmed by a slew of reporters. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator was also on the Miami Dolphins' interview list before they hired Adam Gase, and the Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly interested in talking to Koetter as well.
All of that in addition to the fact that Dirk Koetter is one of the names the Buccaneers themselves are interested in as their own head coach, to the extent that they may have fired Lovie Smith specifically to pursue him. The Bucs interviewed Cardinals offensive coordinator Harold Goodwin yesterday, and will interview Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott this weekend, so Koetter's not the only name on their list.
If Koetter gets hired elsewhere, the Bucs will have a tough job replacing him. Koetter's a quality offensive coordinator and produced one of the best offenses the Bucs have ever had -- though that's not necessarily saying all that much. More importantly, though, he helped Jameis Winston's development. And the last thing you want for your young franchise quarterback is instability.
