Update: According to Ian Rapoport, the 49ers are likely to sign Hue Jackson as their next head coach "if all goes well" in his interview today.
The San Francisco 49ers interviewed Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter yesterday, and Rick Stroud says that "word is" he "really impressed" the 49ers. That's not good for the Buccaneers, assuming they actually want to hire Koetter as their head coach -- something that appears increasingly doubtful.
The 49ers are far from done interviewing, though, and Koetter isn't necessarily their favorite. Hue Jackson is reportedly high on their list of desired head coaches, to the extent that they will reportedly be "pushing hard" for him. The Bucs haven't scheduled and interview with Jackson, as far as anyone's reported at least.
Instead, the Bucs interviewed Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott today, Stroud reports. McDermott's overseen the Panthers defense since 2011, including running meetings and calling plays and all the other things defensive coordinators do since 2012 according to Stroud -- despite the fact that he's operating under a head coach with a defensive background in Ron Rivera. The Panthers had a top-three defense by Football Outsiders' reckoning in 2013 and 2015, ranking 11th in 2012 and 15th in 2014 after ranking dead last in 2011.The Bucs also interviewed Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Harold Goodwin this past week, but there's been no word on how either coach impressed the Bucs.
