Buccaneers vs. Vikings Update: Jameis Winston getting hot

Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are trailing the Minnesota Vikings 9-3 after one quarter of preseason football. This is preseason, though so what you probably should care about is how the individual players looked. So far, it's been up and down -- and mostly down for Jameis Winston.

The Vikings got on the board first with a field goal as the Bucs' defense continued to struggle to produce a pass rush. If it wasn't for quality plays by Johnthan Banks and Alterraun Verner, that drive would have resulted in a touchdown instead.

Surprisingly, the offense actually looked fairly decent. Doug Martin got the start and looked a little more like his rookie self behind an offensive line that actually held up well -- with Kevin Pamphile at left tackle and Garrett Gilkey at right guard. Unfortunately, though, Jameis Winston missed his first three passes in a Bucs uniform as he looked scattershot -- that was probably the nerves, but the team's new quarterback does need to show something the rest of the way.

Winston heated up at the end of the quarter, though, with a 40-yard throw to Vincent Jackson and a quick completion to Louis Murphy leading to the team's first points on the board.
