Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback has lost two fingers on one of his hands in a Fourth of July fireworks accident, the Lincoln Times-News is reporting. The Buccaneers have since more or less confirmed the news, saying that they "are aware that C.J. was involved in an accident that occurred over the July 4th holiday."
"It is our understanding that the injury occurred to one of his hands," the Buccaneers said, "and our primary concern at this moment is for his long-term health. We have been in contact with C.J. and are continuing to monitor the situation."
Wilson played 46 snaps over two games last year, notching four tackles in the process.
Wilson was unlikely to make the roster in the first place, given the stiff competition at defensive back and his very limited playing time last year. I imagine that losing two fingers won't help in that matter, although he wouldn't be the first defensive back to go on to play with limited use of his fingers. Infamously, Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott cut off a part of one of his fingers in the middle of the game to be able to continue playing.
