Buccaneers waive linebacker Brandon Magee

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have waived linebacker Brandon Magee, the team announced today. Mager played in nine games last year, making one tackle on defense and six on special teams.

Magee played reasonably well in a backup role last year, so this release is surprising and oddly-timed. The Bucs don't exactly need the roster space right now, and he was on a minimum contract so it doesn't even save much cap space -- not that they're lacking in that department.

Still, the Bucs have plenty of depth after signing Bruce Carter, with Danny Lansanah and Orie Lemon playing well last year, not to mention the always-good Lavonte David. And it's not like backup linebackers are hard to find. Still, I can't help but wonder what prompted this move -- are they giving him an opportunity to find a roster spot elsewhere?
