Buccaneers claim DE Kourtnei Brown off waivers, again

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have claimed defensive end Kourtnei Brown off waivers, according to the NFL's transaction wire. The Bucs released Lawrence SIdbury to make room for him.

The addition of Brown is a curious one. He entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2012, has bounced around practice squad and spent this offseason with the Houston Texans, where Hard Knocks helped get him noticed. The Bucs picked him up off waivers and let him play one game (no stats) before waiving him again, where he went back to the Texans. He didn't play in a game for them, and was waived this weekend -- and now the Bucs want him back.

That may have something to do with the team's struggles at defensive end. Jacquies Smith showed up as an edge rusher a couple of times against the Philadelphia Eagles after several weeks' absence due to injury, but the Bucs aren't getting much pass rush out of the rest of their defensive ends. Maybe Browns can help them -- though more likely, he's just a fill-in for a couple of weeks.
