The NFL trade deadline hits in three weeks, which means we're seeing interest in trades and the rumors that go with that pick up. And two of them now directly affect the NFC South.
Three teams have inquired about Roddy White's availability in trade, according to Ian Rapoport. White has been an afterthought in Atlanta, catching just six passes for 92 yards this year, and being held without a catch in two games. Julio Jones, Leonard Hankerson and even Jacob Tamme are outperforming White and his days as a useful part of the Falcons offense seem numbered. Of course, it's not exactly clear how useful he'll be to other teams: he was mostly a possession receiver last year and hasn't been a game-changing receiver since 2012.
You might see some rumblings connecting White to the Bucs given that Dirk Koetter is their offensive coordinator, but with Vincent Jackson, Mike Evans and Louis Murphy in town, fitting him into the offense seems unlikely.
The other NFC South name to pop up in trade discussions: Sean Payton. According to Adam Schefter, the Miami Dolphins and other teams "are expected to" see if they can get Sean Payton to come be their head coach after this season, according to Adam Schefter. Payton is 81-51 over his career as a head coach and won a Super Bowl in 2010, but his recent tenure has been marred by his 2012 suspension, a losing record in 2014 and a 1-3 start to this season -- despite the presence of Drew Brees. Payton's biggest problem has always been fielding a competent defense, as he's consistently produced a high-powered offense. That hasn't been helped by poor personnel choices and some horrendous salary cap management, which is finally coming back to hurt the Saints.
Of course, for Payton to move to another team he would either have to be fired, or that team would have to trade for him. Either result seems unlikely -- though there is one team that has traded for a head coach before: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
