Cam Newton's absence from practice stands out as the biggest name on the official practice participation report of the 2014 Buccaneers' season.
The Carolina Panthers' quarterback is recovering from offseason surgery, and also has a fractured rib, and did not participate in practice on Wednesday according to the Panthers' official website.
Newton was the only player on the Panthers' first injury report of the season, meaning all of the other players on their roster participated fully in practice. This means the handful of players dealing with ailments last week have recovered for this week.
The Buccaneers had a few names on the injury report, but none that come as any surprise:
Player | Status | Injury |
---|---|---|
Da'Quan Bowers | Out | Abdomen |
Will Gholston | Out | Shoulder |
Louis Murphy | Out | Back |
Rashaan Melvin | Out | Ankle |
Jorvorskie Lane | Limited | Hand |
Mike James | Limited | Shoulder |
Mike Jenkins | Full participation | Hamstring |
Mike James' limitations likely mean a running back will be called up to the active roster before Sunday's game, as the Buccaneers currently have only Doug Martin and Bobby Rainey at the position. Charles Sims has been placed on IR, and Jeff Demps is on the practice squad.
Cornerback is a bit thin, as well, as Rashaan Melvin represents half of the Bucs' backup "outside" corners, with Quinton Pointer and Leonard Johnson both listed as slot corners. The team may have to add another corner before Sunday's game if Melvin can't go.
Mike Jenkins' full participation is encouraging, but he will be limited in Sunday's game, according to Lovie Smith.
