Another season, another horrid start for our beloved bumbling band of Buccaneers. It's a Bucs Life....to begin looking at the NFL Draft in September.
The season is in ashes, the offensive coordinator AWOL and the great Lovie Smith defense is in a M*A*S*H unit.
Where in the world do we go from here?
This is what I would do:
Play Glennon, first and foremost. Allegedly some NFL Executives believe he's Joe Flacco or something. Frankly, I don't see it, but what the heck, play him. By the end of the season we'd have 26 games and know for a fact if he's worth a damn.
Lovie, get the hell out of the offensive coaches office. Let Arroyo be creative and open up the offense. We know Tedford's not coming in on a white horse with the remaining 80% of his playbook. I'm certain the kid doesn't want to do run, run, pass, punt (or INT, as it were). So give him a legitimate shot at being effective. Let him run the up tempo offense. Let's do the speed and space, 3 step drop and fire thing we heard so much about in training camp. This team cannot win games playing Buc Ball. They neither have the defense or the offensive line. So spread the gorram field, open it up and see what happens. Let's face it, it can't get much worse offensively.
Defensively, there's not much you really can do at this point but get a little healthier. I'd bench either Barron or Goldson and go with Tandy or Major Wright at FS and whomever is left at the other safety. Johnathan Casillas, you are the weakest link in the linebacking core. Take a seat and let's see what Lansanah can do. The defensive line...what can you do? Hope Johnson gets healthy and shows up. Hope McCoy and Gholston will be able to play. Let's continue to do a bit more blitzing and man-to-man, too. Especially early.
I'm not into playing for the draft pick. The Bucs should try to build some momentum for next season, finish strong. You can always trade up for your Franchise QB if you need to.
Of course, this coming off-season the Bucs need to attack both lines of scrimmage. Obviously they must re-sign McCoy. He's the engine of the Tampa Two. As for other vets, I don't want cheaper guys with "Potential" (ala Michael Johnson and EDS). I want vets, guys with a superior pedigree that have done it in this league before. On Defense, find guys familiar with the system that have had success and know what the hell they're doing.
Find the best spread OC you can find. I want a disciple of the Patriots or Saints or Chip Kelly's system. Let's modernize this offense for once. And then Lovie, leave them the hell alone.
In the draft (assuming Glennon sucks), get your franchise QB. The Bucs can't continue to have the fourth worst QB in a four team division and expect to ever compete. Mariota, Hunley, maybe some guy like Bortles we've never heard of until draft time. Notice I didn't say Winston. Stay away from that numbskull. Then, let's go at it again with renewed confidence that this...2015...may be the year the Bucs finally turn it around. Or not...
