Buccaneers bring in Richie Incognito for visit

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are desperate enough at offensive guard to give Richie Incognito a look.

USA TODAY Sports

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are bringing in Richie Incognito for a visit, according to Jay Glazer. The Buccaneers have massive issues at offensive guard, although at least Oniel Cousins and Patrick Omameh didn't look completely incompetent the past two preseason games.

Bringing in Incognito will certainly please a portion of the fanbase, but I can't see this as a positive. Incognito has never left a team on good terms, and was kicked off the Miami Dolphins' team after bullying Jonathan Martin into leaving, and being a ringleader in establishing a toxic culture along the offensive line.

It's important to note that Incognito has not been reinstated to participate during the regular season, per Jeff Darlington. That clearance is expected soon, but this is not just a formality and could derail any plans to sign him.

If the Bucs do sign Incognito, they'll have to be very, very certain that what occurred with the Dolphins won't happen in Tampa. The Bucs do have some veteran leadership on the offensive line, with experienced players like Anthony Collins, Evan Dietrich-Smith and Demar Dotson in place.I'm fairly confident that Lovie Smith will be able to handle the problems Incognito will present, but that still makes for a very poor look.

Even considering Incognito is a sign of how desperation for the Bucs, who publicly had been pretty positive on their options at offensive guard. Incognito's play declined heavily in 2013 and coupled with his persistent attitude problems, signing him simply doesn't sound like a good idea.

This entire mess could have been avoided had the Bucs adequately addressed their offensive guard position during the offseason. Even a blind man could see they needed help at that position, and while the Bucs certainly got rid of their starters they failed to bring in competent replacements. And that now means they're desperate enough to bring in a potential locker room disaster in Incognito.
