Position battles and Vines from today's Buccaneers training camp

It's the second day of padded practices at training camp today, and we have plenty of practice observations, pictures and video for you. A little early as I have to be off -- but Leo will be back later with more observations from training camp.

Injuries

Per Scott Smith, both Alterraun Verner and Rashaan Melvin were sitting out practice. Melvin was at least no longer wearing a boot, while Lovie Smith noted yesterday that neither injury was serious. That was it for injuries today, too: the Bucs continue to be extraordinarily healthy. Even Luke Stocker.

Brandon Myers was absent for personal reasons, per Rick Stroud.

Position battles

The competition at guard got a new twist today, as fifth-round pick Kadeem Edwards and undrafted rookie Matt Patchan got a shot with the first team at left and right guard respectively, per Roy Cummings. Patrick Omameh also got some snaps at right guard, per JoeBucsFan. That's unlikely to signal a permanent shift, but the Bucs are clearly still looking for a definite pair of starters. Personally I would not be surprised to see Edwards and Meredith start in week one.

Luke Stocker is in the picture as at least the best blocker on the team. Leo noted his prodigious return to form both yesterday and today. Not that he's done much as a erceiver, mind you, but it's not inconceivable that he makes the roster as a special teamer and/or blocking tight end.

The Bucs also worked on kick returns. Leo noted that Chris Owusu, Solomon Patton, Charles Sims, Skye Dawson, Lavelle Hawkins, Jeff Demps and Robert Herron all got a shot there.

Interestingly, Dane Fletcher, Danny Lansanah and Ka'lial Glaud were the team's second-string linebackers today, per Greg Auman. Undrafted rookie Nate Askew was hyped as a good fit to back up Lavonte David, but he hasn't made a splash since rookie minicamp.
