Lovie Smith talks position battles and injuries

Lovie Smith's press conference today at Tampa Bay Buccaneers training camp dug into injuries and a few position battles.

Injuries

No serious injuries to report, according to Lovie Smith, which probably means Jamon Meredith leaving the field was just dehydration. Rashaan Melvin's injury was "very minor", too, even though he was spotted wearing a boot.

One interesting note: Mark Barron was apparently dealing with a knee injury this offseason, not a hamstring injury. That's more troubling, though he's back on the field now.

Position battles

Jamon Meredith and Oniel Cousins are getting first crack at the starting guard spots because they're veterans who have done this before. Lovie Smith noted that everyone is getting reps, which means the competition is far from over.

Lovie Smith threw some love Mike Glennon's way, noting that if he had to come in for Josh McCown, he could win some games for them. Still sounds like McCown is definitely their starting quarterback.

Paying Da'Quan Bowers and William Gholston at defensive tackle is a necessity, as the Bucs will dress just seven defensive linemen on game days. Versatility is key, then.
