Greg Schiano built an expansive front office and coaching staff for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last year, with a whopping 24 coaches working under his supervision. The more the merrier, he must have thought, as no team had more coaches last year -- the Seahawks and Eagles also had 24 coaches. As was usually the case with Greg Schiano's decisions, the size of his coaching staff was frequently mocked.
That changed this year. Lovie Smith built a staff of 20 coaches, which is slightly below average, according to Bleeding Green Nation's count. There appears to be no real correlation between a coaching staff's size and team success so, you know, don't take this to actually mean anything. But at least it's another thing Lovie Smith is doing differently from Greg Schiano, so I guess that's a positive?
Still, neat anecdotes and looking for meaning where there probably is none. That's what the offseason is for, right? Go Bucs!
