Lovie Smith: "Mike Glennon is our quarterback for the future"

New, comments

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers see Mike Glennon as their quarterback of the future, it seems.

Lovie Smith just dropped a bomb at this otherwise unremarkable press conference following the selection of Mike Evans as the Bucs' first-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

"I love Mike Glennon. Mike Glennon is our quarterback for the future."

That's what Lovie said after being asked about passing on Johnny Manziel and adding a third quarterback to the mix. That's a stark departure from most offseason reports, which focused on the Bucs being intent on adding a franchise quarterback to the mix. Those reports continued until this very day, with reports coming out that the Bucs would move Glennon for a second-round pick.

Now, Lovie Smith has generally been complimentary of Mike Glennon when asked directly about him, but other remarks seemed to show that they didn't see him as a fit with their offense -- most notably the constant focus on speed and athleticism at the quarterback position. Offensive coordinator Tedford has traditionally had mobile quarterbacks, too, making the fit more dubious.

It's entirely possible that this is simply part of an effort to trade Mike Glennon, or that they see him as a quarterback of the future -- until they find a better one. They did bring in a slew of quarterbacks for pre-draft visits. Still, that seems unlikely given Lovie Smith's generally open and forthright approach to these press conferences. Then again, that would make the previous interest in quarterbacks in the draft a smokescreen.

For now, we should probably operate under the assumption that the Bucs don't plan on adding another quarterback, and that they see Mike Glennon as a part of their future.
