Buccaneers to get new helmet and logo, Warren Sapp anounces

New helmets are coming for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Update: The Bucs have announced that there will be both a new helmet and a new logo.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will refresh their helmet designs this year, Warren Sapp announced on Twitter. It looks like those helmets will be unveiled on NFL Network on Thursday night, 8 PM ET. Assuming I correctly read his tweet.

There's also the cryptic "fire" note in Sapp's tweet. Is that just a reference to it looking awesome, or are we going to see some kind of firing cannons on the new helmet? Sapp later noted that the helmet will have a chrome grill -- which sounds pretty cool.

The last time the Bucs updated their helmet, they updated their entire look back in 1997 in an effort to reboot the franchise.

The helmets led to a little controversy last season, when the throwback game had to be cancelled. A (rather useless) new NFL rule said that players were required to wear the same helmet year-round, and the Bucs apparently couldn't find a way to wrap the throwback style around the players' regular helmets. I would expect this year's helmets to address that, too.
