The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will face Derek Anderson on Sunday, the Carolina Panthers announced today. Cam Newton was involved in a car accident yesterday, but was discharged from the hospital after being held for observation for one night. While Newton hasn't been seriously injured, he will still miss Sunday's game.
You'd think that would be good news for the Bucs, but that's not so clear. The Bucs actually faced Anderson in their first game this season, and the veteran completed 24 of 34 passes for 230 yards, two touchdowns and no turnovers in that game. That's pretty good for a scattershot but strong-armed pocket quarterback.
Of course, the Bucs defense is much improved since then, so results are likely to be different. Despite Anderson's quality play and two Josh McCown interceptions, the Panthers still only scored 20 points in that game. They'll find it tougher to score even that many points this week, given the Bucs' stout defense in recent weeks.
