Akeem Spence was arrested in Flomaton, Alabama for unlawful possession of marijuana, according to NorthEscambia.com and later confirmed by Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times and Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune, among others.
Akeem Spence was the Bucs' fourth-round draft pick this past year and had a solid rookie season as the run-stopping tilted nose tackle in the team's 4-3 defense.
Law enforcement found marijuana in Spence's vehicle after stopping him for speeding, as they caught him going over 100 mph. He was released on a $3,000 bond. The possession charge is a misdemeanor in Alabama, with a maximum jail sentence of one year and a maximum fine of $6,000.
Spence likely won't be suspended by the NFL for his arrest. Initial violations of the league substance abuse policy lead to an increased amount of tests, but not suspensions. Of course, it's possible that this isn't Spence's first violation of the substance abuse policy, in which case we can expect a league suspension, generally lasting four games for the first time.
Undoubtedly the team will take some internal disciplinary action, although we're very unlikely to hear about it. Lovie Smith generally deals with those issues behind closed doors.
