Darrelle Revis trade rumors: Buccaneers would pay Revis, trade deal to get creative

Rich Barnes-US PRESSWIRE

One hangup in a potential deal for Darrelle Revis has been the possible compensation paid to Revis. The Buccaneers have not been allowed to speak to Revis' agents by the Jets, who have to give permission for any team to talk to one of the players they have under contract. With Revis supposedly seeking one of the richest deals for a defensive player in the NFL, that could be kind of a problem. But Jason La Canfora reports that it won't be. Whether that's because the Bucs will pay Revis top dollar or whether his demands have lowered from the rhetoric of 2010 is not known at this point, but the money is not expected to be a problem.

La Canfora has two other interesting nuggets in that story. First, the owners meetings coming up next week will be an event where the Revis trade talks will probably heat up. That's when all the owners and front offices will be in one place, and when the Buccaneers and Jets could easily strike a deal -- or where the Jets could come to terms with another team.

The third bit of information may be most intriguing. As reported before by Jason Cole of Yahoo!, the Bucs are unwilling to give up a first-round pick in 2013. That's not surprising, but the Jets would really like a first-round pick what with their lacking talent basically everywhere on the roster. One solution to this conundrum would be a conditional 2014 draft pick that could elevate to a first-rounder depending on Revis' playing time, possible Pro Bowl election or other conditions. That would give the Buccaneers some insurance, while giving the Jets a bigger upside.
