NFL Draft Order 2014: Jaguars win, but keep top draft pick

The 2014 NFL draft order is becoming more and more cloudy, as the top of the draft draws closer.

Bob Levey

The Jacksonville Jaguars have won their second game of the year, and yet they still have the top pick in the draft. Both the Atlanta Falcons and Houston Texans have the same record, but they have much tougher year-long schedules, which means they lose the tiebreaker for the top pick in the draft. Sorry, Houston, no Bridgewater for you -- unless you lose a lot more games, that is.

One other game that had a big impact today: the tie game between the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers.I had to spend half an hour to add code to my spreadsheet to incorporate ties, so there's that. The other interesting consequence is that the Vikings' and Packers' strength of schedule is now essentially irrelevant, and that it's increasingly less likely that we see strength of schedule ties. The Vikings now have the fourth overall pick, in fact, just ahead of 3-8 Tampa Bay.

If the Redskins lose tomorrow, which seems exceedingly likely, we'll see the Rams (who own their pick) take over the fifth overall spot. That battle for the top pick in the draft between Tampa Bay and Jacksonville now seems ages ago -- even though it was still going on just last week. Instead, we now have a three-way fight for the top pick, with the Vikings, Rams (via Washington) and Buccaneers on the outside.
