The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have the first overall pick, at least until tomorrow night when they take on the Miami Dolphins on Monday Night Football. The Jacksonville Jaguars gave up that pick by beating the Tennessee Titans. Yes, that's right, the Jacksonville Jaguars beat an actual, real, NFL team.
The Bucs may be winless now, but they're unlikely to go winless on the season. It's just really, really hard to do that. There's a reason why only one team has gone 0-16 in NFL history, and only one team managed 0-14. Both of those teams had almost no NFL-starting-level talent, which is not something you can say for the Bucs. They don't have the easiest schedule in the world. but the Dolphins, Falcons and Rams are all beatable, while the Saints might rest their starters in the final week of the season.
At the same time, the Jaguars could easily pick up a win or two, too. Their schedule is really easy: Cardinals, at Texans, at Browns, Texans, Bills, Titans, at Colts. That is just two teams with a winning record over the final seven weeks, one of them being Arizona.
And that's why strength of schedule is still important -- and the Jaguars rule the day, there. If the Buccaneers win tomorrow against the Miami Dolphins, the Jaguars will take over as the team with the top pick in the draft regardless of what happens on Monday Night Football.
The rest of the draft is getting interesting too, though. The Falcons and Vikings hold the third and fourth overall picks for now. Minnesota will likely draft a quarterback, but the Falcons could take either a pass rusher or an offensive tackle at the top of the draft as they should be pretty satisfied with Matt Ryan.
