Michael Vick will not play for the Philadelphia Eagles against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers today. Michael Vick is active, but will not play -- unless, of course, they really need him to.
Nick Foles will get the start in his place, which will likely have some consequences for the read-option oriented Chip Kelly offense. Foles did beat the Buccaneers last season, leading a last-second touchdown drive to win 23-21, but the Bucs had arguably the worst pass defense in the NFL at that point. This year, they have one of the best defensive units.
The Bucs on their part will be missing wide receiver Mike Williams, who has been struggling with a hamstring injury. That's a blow for Mike Glennon making his second start, as the Bucs' offense this season has mostly consisted of throwing isolation to Williams and Vincent Jackson, trusting them to win against man coverage. Tiquan Underwood, Chris Owusu or Eric Page could replace Williams as the starter.
Carl Nicks will not be suiting up due to MRSA. It's not clear how severe the recurrence of the infection is, and it's possible that he may need surgery down the line, although they're more likely to try to combat the infection with another round of strong antibiotics so as not to lose the All-Pro for the season. Johnthan Banks, also infected, was cleared by the NFL and NFLPA after jointly hired medical experts determined that he holds no risk for other players.
The Bucs do get Tom Crabtree on the field for the first time this year, which means they finally have a tight end who can both catch and block. I know, it's shocking. Vincent Jackson appears to be fully healed from his rib injury which limited him two weeks ago.
