The Tampa Bay Buccaneers introduced their version of the "Big 3" to the world today. Florida already has a "Big 3" down in Miami so I thought we might come up with something a little different. The Triple Play? The Awesome Trio? Either way Vincent Jackson, Eric Wright, and Carl Nicks all signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers within 24 hours of the start of free agency. At 1:00pm EST the Bucs held an official press conference to introduce their new stars.
The 3 newest Buccaneers were joined by the Head Coach of the Bucs Greg Schiano and the GM Mark Domink. There were several things to take away from this press conference.
- Vincent Jackson looks every bit the confident practiced professional we've all heard about. He was very well spoken and seemed ready to come in and not only get to work himself but show some of his younger teammates how to do it right.
- These guys do not see the Buccaneers as a rebuilding team. They seem to be looking at the team and remembering something most of us Buccaneer fans forgot over the last 10 games of last year, there is talent and promise on this roster and our new additions might be just want the doctor ordered to get the young players on this team back on track. Both Vincent Jackson and Eric Wright when asked gave similar answers about where the Buccaneers are in the rebuilding process. Vincent Jackson said,"You can call it rebuilding if you want to but that's a matter of perspective." "We're starting with a clean slate and right now we're the same as the other 31 teams." Eric Wright said,"Rebuilding is a matter of perspective." Sounds like these guys want to come in and make this franchise a winner from day one.
- All 3 guys mentioned feeling a sense of family with the Bucs. Greg Schiano seems to have had a large part in that.
-Carl Nicks seems very down to earth and ready to come in and get physical!
-Greg Schiano continues to show his class and professionalism as a head coach and ambassador for the Buccaneers organization. Going to the airport yourself at 4:00am to pick up your newly signed players was a classy move.
-Domink indicated that the Buccaneers were done in free agency and will now turn their attentions to the NFL draft. Although it's not out of the realm of possibility for the Bucs to sign a player or 2 more, it seems as though the heavy lifting in free agency has been completed.
It's been a fast and furious 24 hours for Tampa Bay however one thing is certain, these past 24 hours have been the equivalent of Extreme Home Makeover for our Bucs. All in one day we've gotten a new dangerous deep threat wide receiver, one of the best offensive linemen in the NFL, and a solid start to rebuilding our secondary. If indeed this is all we end up doing in free agency, I can't say I'm disappointed at all. As our focus turns to the draft next month one thing is certain, the landscape at One Buc Place has drastically changed even if the field itself has stayed the same.
