The Top 10 Draft Hits In Buccaneers History - #1 Lee Roy Selmon

And finally we come to the best draft pick the Bucs have ever made. That can only be the only Hall of Fame Inductee who can rightfully be called a Buccaneer first: Lee Roy Selmon. This Oklahoma defensive end was the first overall pick of the 1976 draft, and with that the first draft pick the Bucs ever made. He lived up to his high draft status with ease, going to 6 Pro Bowls, being selected First-Team All-Pro thrice and Second-Team All-Pro Twice. He was on the 1980s All-Decade team and won Defensive Player of the Year for his efforts in the 1979 season, when the Bucs defense carried a team all the way to the NFC Championship, only to lose to the Rams. In 1995 he was further honored when he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It's clear that Lee Roy Selmon was a dominant player, but these accolades don't really do justice to Lee Roy Selmon's dominance.

When you watch old Bucs game footage, Lee Roy Selmon just jumps off screen. He would beat tackles left and right, then beat the guard the offense assigned to keep him off the quarterback, and then he'd slam the QB into the ground. He'd beat linemen with speed and with power, and he was nearly unstoppable. And Lee Roy wasn't a 4-3 defensive end or a 3-4 outside linebacker - he was a 3-4 end, taking on double teams every single play. If you've never seen footage of Lee Roy Selmon play, hit the jump to see some, but I'd recommend finding some old game to watch and wonder at Selmon's play. I was amazed when I watched those games, because it really was unlike any player I've seen in more recent years.

And with that, this list comes to an end. I hope you've enjoyed it. Hopefully the Bucs can add someone worthy of being on this list later today.

8. Mike Alstott
