Tampa Tribune legendary writer Tom McEwen coined the phrase during the Buccaneers 3 consecutive weeks towards the end of the '79 season. Because with 4 weeks to go, the Bucs had to only win one more game to clinch the NFC Central division title and a playoff birth. But they lost three games in a row, and they seemed to get worse each week...
WEEK 13 Minnesota- STP Oil Treatment was put all over the goal posts to help prevent Bucs fans from tearing down the goalposts after the home win. It was all wasted, just like the Bucs kicking teams. A missed Xtra point, FG, and Punt all doomed the Bucs, who scored with seconds left as Doug Williams heroically willed himself into the end zone, landing on his head. But Neil O'Donoghue had his PAT blocked and the Bucs lost a chance to go into overtime, and lost a chance to celebrate a title. They would get a chance the next week.
WEEK 14- Chicago- More STP, and still more misery, this time a whitewashing of the Bucs, 14-0 to the Bears, who climbed back into the race now only back by two games with two games left. The Bucs would have to play on the road in San Francisco, then return against the Chiefs.
WEEK 15- @ San Francisco- It was OJ Simpsons last home game, and he had some heroic runs for the 49ers who gave rookie Head Coach Bill Walsh his second win of the season, and 49er fans showed Bucs fans how to do it by ripping down the goalposts in their stadium.....all for their second win. Doug Williams had another poor day, and 4 interceptions increased the pressure on the Bucs, now only ONE game ahead of Chicago, with ONE game to go; Home against the Kansas City Chiefs! Would the Bucs be champs? or Chokeneers?
