Sign Barber to deal that includes coaching clause.

We all know that Ronde is near the end of his time as a Buccaneer player. He might have one or two years at best as a starting corner for us, but everyone knows that he has always taken a leadership role in the locker room and that he likes to mentor and teach the younger players. So I say that we resign him for one year, but include language in the contract that brings him back after that as our Secondary Coach, or any other defensive staff position Coach Schiano sees fit.

Why not keep Talib, and wait out his legal situation. Maybe Coach Schiano's coaching style will have a positive effect on him. Then we can draft one of the top corners in the league, and team those two up with Ronde for one year. He can help them develop, and then after one year of playing with them, he will still be on our staff to help coach them.

There is no doubt in my mind that Ronde will coach somewhere, someday. Has there ever been a more diverse corner in the league? Imagine the things that he will someday coach his players to do. There is no doubt in my mind that it is in our franchise's best interests to lock him up now.

Riddle me this?

There is no secret. I want the Bucs to draft Trent Richardson. But this isnt a fanpost trying to convince you on why we should draft him. I had to make this a fanpost because I feel this is a good point and many of you may have missed it. I know alot of you that are opposed to Richardson and are for Claiborne and I get that. But some say that we don't need to get a running back that high, or that we can get a running back in the lower rounds or undrafted.

So lets say Polk or James in the draft are available in the 2nd or third round for example (which many of you feel are good alternatives at running back instead of drafting Richardson at 5. Why are we even drafting them that high if the logic is that you can find good running backs off the street? Why are we wasting a 2nd or third round pick on drafting polk or james? Why dont we use that pick for another hole to fill on defense and get a running back off the street?

Please let me know what you think.

SB Nation 2012 Mock Draft

Greetings Bucs Nation, P_Roach17 here from Bleeding Green Nation attempting to organize a SB Nation-wide mock draft. After a disappointing season for my Birds, (and being less than thrilled with having to watch the Giants in the SB) I'm left with a football void at my core. So, as a result, I'm turning to the rest of SB Nation to satisfy not only my football needs, but the needs of others who are on the outside looking in during this 2011 postseason. You will of course be representing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in this Draft, who currently hold the 5th overall pick in the 2012 draft, as I'm sure you all know. Your cooperation in this poll is greatly appreciated. Note: I would like for this poll to reflect the fans choice, not necessarily who you think your team will draft. Now for a few quick rules.

Rules:

1) There will be no trading picks. Trading picks would be both complicated, and time consuming, so everyone will just stay put at their set draft position.

2) Submit your votes for the player of your choice as soon as possible. After 2 days the results of the poll will be final, Bucs Nation will submit its pick at 1am on 2/4/12, and Hogs Haven will be on the clock.

3) If you feel as though I have left a player out that deserves consideration as your teams draft selection, then let me know in the comments section, and I will gladly add them.

4) Any draft talk (or argument) that is to be made pertaining to your Bucs' pick, feel free to make in the comments section.

5) ******** Be sure to rec this post so that it will remain under the recommended fan post section for everyone to see, and so that they are able to cast their vote *********

Ron Prince as our OL coach. He was an assistant OL coach for a good offensive line in Indianapolis. Worth a shot right??? He did a good job there and withthe pool of quality/capable candididates available I think we should give him a good look. Position coaches that were on superbowl caliber teams dont come along often, I think we cant afford to ignore that experience and understanding of the game at that position. What is eveyrone elses take on this particular coach/position?

Return of the FB

Here's something that could be interesting. With the possible release of Earnest Graham, could Schiano convince and coach Blount to be a starting Fullback? If the BUCS entertained this idea, they could be possibly look to draft Richardson at #5. It kinda fits into the "run the ball physically" mantra. It would keep defenses guessing.

Blount is not unlike Alstott in the skillset area. We don't know how well he catches out of the backfield because he was rarely used to do so. We've not seen what he can do blocking yet either. But if he has the will, much like the smaller Graham did, he could possibly pull it off. Besides, FBs are normally north/south runners that can kill in the second level of defenses. Blount can do that. Freeman said he felt comfortable being protected by Blount this past season even though he(Blount) didn't get to showcase it on 3rd downs.

With Richardson and Blount in the backfield, this would instantly strike fear in most DCs in the NFC South and most likely around the league. It would also bolster the thought of needing a top speed #1WR to blow the top off the defenses. As a fan, I'd love to see the speed and excitement of a deep ball. But I wouldn't trade it for the constant bruising of an effective running attack that most definitely will open up big pass plays eventually.

Of course, this is hypothetical. But would this not work? The BUCS definitely need help at the CB position which offers a "ShutDown/Elite" player in the form LSU's Morris Claiborne in the Draft. But if for some reason he's not available, could the BUCS not make the Richardson pick work?

I have heard rumors only like Butch Davis ac assistant HC/DC, Love it!!!!!!!! Any word on poss OC candidates? I heard someome mention poss Todd Haley or Hue Jackson, I would take Hue before Todd in terms of style of play for Schiano. So anyone I havent mentioned thata serious candidate or will it be another secret signing?? I heard the Mcnulty thing may have a loophole for him to still be able to break contract and leave?????

Is there a quick fix to the Bucs defense?

Tampa had a tough year in 2011. From poor offensive production to a porous defense, nothing really went right for the Bucs. But if there is any area of the team that needs a major improvement, it's the defense. So, how difficult will it be for Tampa to field a quality defense in 2012? It may not be as hard as some think. Hit the jump to see why.

It is no secret that Tampa's defense needs an overhaul, but one area that doesn't need much change is the defensive line. With five players chosen in the first three rounds of the past three drafts, Tampa has invested heavily in the position. Add in players like Bennet and Haynesworth, and the Bucs have plenty of talent along the line. With a full offseason of work, the D-line could turn into a real strength for Tampa Bay. So who would be the most likely to start along the line in 2012?

If I had to guess, I'd say Clayborn and McCoy are safe bets at right end and the three technique, respectively. Price seems to have little competition at nose, save for maybe Roy Miller. The really interesting position to watch will be left end. Bennet has shown he is a talented rusher, but Bowers played well at the end of the season. This will be a camp battle that may come down to who plays the run best, as both players have proven to excel at the pass rush. Either way, look for Clayborn, Price, McCoy, and Bowers/Bennet to improve as a unit, and prove to be a strength for this team.

At linebacker, things get a little more messy. None of the three starters from last season impressed, and all three will have to prove they can get the job done to hold on to starting spots next year, provided they even make the team. Of the three, Foster should get the most leeway, as last year was his first as a starting linebacker, and he ultimately disappointed the least.

Geno Hayes may be in the most danger of losing not only his starting job, but also his roster spot. In a contract year, he under preformed, was benched, and returned to the lineup only to under perform some more. He will have to do a lot to show he deserves to make this team. Black is no better off than Hayes, except that his contract has not expired, thanks to his shiny new (undeserved) contract. Don't be surprised if the Bucs cut him, or attempt to rework his contract to better suit his output.

Ultimately, the linebacking core could see the most turnover. Expect Foster to stay, but possibly move to the weak side, where he played his best ball in college. If the Bucs have a chance to nab a starting quality MLB in free agency or the 2nd round of the draft, Fosters chance of sliding over to the weak side becomes much more likely. In any scenario, I would expect Dakota Watson to take over the strong side. He would give the Bucs a Sam that has the potential to rush the edge, and given coach Shiano's more blitz happy defensive tendencies, Watsons rushing talent could be a welcome change at Sam. My bet for the starting lineup, for whats its worth, would be on: Foster - Will, A FA/2nd rounder - Mike, Watson - Sam.

The Secondary may be the Bucs weakest link on defense. Talib may be in jail or suspended by April, and Ronde may have played his last down as a Buc. That leaves Biggers, Lewis, Mack and Gaitor as the only CBs on the roster. That is a huge problem, no matter how good the rest of the defense preforms. I fully expect our first round pick to be a corner to help fix this weakness. Claiborn is the most popular pick among Bucs fans at the corner spot, but if he is gone by the 5th pick, the Bucs may consider moving down to get Kirkpatrick or Jenkins. Also, expect Tampa to go after a Finnegan or Grimes in free agency.

At saftey, the Bucs may have more talent the their 2011 play would suggest. Jackson could still factor into the starting FS position. With an offseason of work, he should return to form, provided he relearns how to tackle. At the SS spot, expect Grimm to push for the starting role, provided he can stay healthy. Jones should not be back, and Grimm is the only proven starting quality saftey left to push for the spot. Grimm was a former linebacker in college, meaning he could preform well as a SS playing up in the box against teams with potent run games, and is a more natural fit at SS than at FS. While Tampa could go after another safety in FA or the draft, the needs at Corner, Linebacker and the Oline may cause them to spend the picks, and money, elsewhere. Expect Tanard and Grimm back as the starting safeties, while our corners could both be new additions the the team.

While the defense has a long way to go, it may not need to many more pieces, but rather, better coaching to bring out the potential in this young defense.

An Ode to Running Backs

Here we go. A chart for 'starting' running backs in the NFL per recent depth charts.

The round they were drafted in.

How many probowls they have been involved in since 2008.

I did not include retired RBs, and RBs that have dropped out of 'starter' status.

45 percent of pro bowl spots were taken by first round picks since 2008.

43 percent of starters were drafted in the first round.

This makes a point that to get a 'starting' caliber RB in the first round you have just about the same chance as drafting a CB in the first round. However, an 'all pro' caliber running back is far easier to find in the later rounds then CBs. Which has significant drop off after the first round.

Feel free to inform me of noticeable omissions.

To Draft a CB or to not Draft a CB

As everyone knows the bucs need a new secondary, and there is an elite CB that will most likely be available to the bucs at the #5 spot. What I find strange is that a ton of fans on this site think we need to draft a running back at #5. Maybe they don't 'get' football, who knows, but to help with my argument here are some stats.

80 percent of all pro bowl selections since 2008 featured CBs drafted in the first round.

38 percent of all 'starting' CBs are first round selections.

Below is a spread sheet of my data, if you see any glaring omissions or errors, let me know and I will adjust.

Some Off Season Moves that Make Sense (to me anyways)

Since the hiring of Greg Schiano, and the introductory press conference, I have been taking some time to think about the team, and how we might look by the time the 2012-2013 season begins. Schiano put an emphasis on running the ball physically, and taking shots down the field. As of right now, I do not believe that the offensive unit is capable of playing to that scheme right now, but there will be plenty of options for us if that is the direction the team honestly wants to go.

First, we need to finally claim ourselves the speedy WR we've never had, and we can have that if we go after Desean Jackson. We all know his situation in Philly is less than stable, and it wouldn't be too hard for the Bucs to put together a deal that would meet Jackson's demands and bring him to the Bay area. With the addition of Jackson, it would force defenses to keep safeties back, and prevent 8 man boxes to stonewall Blount. We have a good QB in Freeman that has plenty of arm strength to make Freeman to Jackson a deadly combination.

Secondly, drafting Trent Richardson at the number 5 spot could turn out to be too high for a RB, albeit, a talented one such as Richardson would add another dimension to the backfield that the Bucs have never really had. It is entirely possible for the Bucs to trade out of the number 5 spot in order to stock up on picks, or we could sit tight at number 5 and Draft Claiborne instead. If this is the case, the Bucs could wait until the 2nd or 3rd round to draft Lamichael James instead of spending the number 5 pick on Richardson. That would add a third down back to our unit, and allow Blount to focus solely on his position as a north-south runner.

Adding Desean Jackson and Richardson would give Freeman two dynamic weapons to play with, but seeing as our defensive backfield could be potentially crippled by the retirement of Ronde and the prosecution of Talib, Adding Claiborne in the first, and James in the latter rounds could be a good scenario as well. A lot of this truly depends on whether the Glazers are willing to shell out some money in order to stock up on much needed talent. They say No. 5 is the franchise, and that they will "...spend whatever it takes to win...", so now is the time for the FO to make some moves and bring the team back to life.

What do you think Bucs fans?

2012 Buccaneers?

First thing's first. When they announced Schiano was our guy, I was disappointed. I felt like I was set up by Jimmy Kimmel on one of those "Give your kids a bad Christmas present" scheme. I felt like it was Christmas Morning, I was so excited to get the new "Red Rider BB Gun," and instead ended up with a set of pink bunny pajamas. The Buccaneers have named their new head coach: Greg Schiano. Greg WHO?!

I was bummed until I heard the man speak. It was much different than Raheem. I could actually understand what he was saying. That's not a dig at Raheem's lack of skill in actually talking, but everything he was saying just made sense. He looked genuinely excited to be here. Not just excited to get a promotion to the NFL, but genuinely excited to be the new face of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He hit every topic in which we need. The best part of all, he exuded the confidence that he can turn it around. We needed a leader. That just might be what we've found in Coach Schiano.

"Run the football physically and take shots down the field. That formula works."

Yes coach, it does. As long as we have the right talent for it. It's hard to judge our talent we have here in Tampa, fairly. We have seen sparks in everyone, but we are missing major pieces to the puzzle. This season we have major questions, that hopefully can get answered.

We were bad last season. B-A-D, BAD. Across the board bad.Was it Blount's lack of vision or the line's lack of opportunities? Was it Freeman's lack of skill, or the line not holding/receivers not getting open? We have no deep threat to take the top off of the defenses. Will the Glazers finally spend the money we've all been hearing about? There are big name free agents out there to fit some of our needs. DeSean Jackson? He's pretty fast. Ray Rice? You remember him right coach? Not that they're looking to part ways from where they are, but it wouldn't hurt to try. RIGHT?

If it were me, I'd go for DeSean Jackson. He'd be my free agency priority. He's a headcase, I get it...but it would be nice to be able to stretch the field. Ray Rice: that's just a pipe dream. It wouldn't happen, but it would be interesting to see if he'd like to reunite with his former coach. We need O linemen bad. Target them as well. As for defense: "Yes, I'd like one of everything please." I'd build through the draft though. Maybe a free agent line backer. Curtis Lofton, Anthony Spencer, Stephen Tulloch or maybe end/linebacker hybrid. Mario Williams would do.

At the 5 spot in the draft, I say we take Richardson. We don't know if Blount is "the guy" but remember last time we were 4th and we skipped on a talented RB? His name was Adrian Peterson. He'd be nice to have, don't you think? Maybe we don't make that same mistake twice? (No I'm not comparing the 2, but Richardson's talent is undeniable.) We need a corner. Ronde is a legend, and is welcome in my book for as long as he's willing. But is he?

Talib, his talent is there but is his brain? He's trouble with a capital T. I'm still not sold. If we take Richardson at 5, and b/c of his troubles (which I'm not a fan of since Talib), Janoris Jenkins drops to the 2nd round, that's best case scenario for me. I'd play the best available game from their on. I'm just a fan though. A fan with high hopes, and high expectations.

T.B.A Coach? Ok. I'll buy in. I'll Trust you. I'll Believe in you. And yes, I will definitely hold you Accountable!

Recent RU Alum - About Schiano

I'm actually a huge Eagles fan, but I figured I'd come over here since I recently graduated from Rutgers and know a little about your future coach.

First off, his players LOVE him. No, he won't be walking around telling everyone "He's the best ___ in the League" like one Rex Ryan, but he's an extremely emotional coach who leaves it all on the sidelines. You will see how passionate he is, and his team's tend to take on his personality. He handled the Eric LeGrand situation better than anyone could've asked, which is a trait he'll need at the NFL level after tough losses.

As for X's and O's, he's obviously a great defensive mind. Runs a 4-3 which is key considering you've invested a lot high draft picks on 4-3 DL. He had typically small, quick defenses at Rutgers built on sideline to sideline speed.

It may have been the Special Teams Coach, but Rutgers was known for having BRILLIANT special teams. I mean brilliant. It felt like every other week they'd block a punt or kick, normally in big spots too.

Offense, however, is not his forte. The most important thing for him will be to higher a good offensive coordinator because he isn't skilled at all in this area. The 2010 Rutgers offense was absolutely putrid, and it made the games unwatchable. So hope for the best.

The reason he's connected to Belichick (as many of you have heard) is because Bill's son played lacrosse at Rutgers. Belichick, for whatever reason, took a liking to the Rutgers Football program.

I wish Schiano well, he definitely took a program that was pretty much dead for decades and made them competitive. You have a young team and it's obvious young players respond very well to him, which is one of the most important things about being a HC. Good luck!

Why Don't People Want to Coach for Tampa Bay?

Hello all, I'm an Arizona Cardinals fan. I also live in Pennsylvania. However, that quixotic combination hasn't stopped me from observing what is happening around the league, especially with a team like the Bucs. I asked myself: how do they win without a star quarterback or overwhelming defense? What is it they do so well that led them to a 10-6 record in 2010? It seemed improbable, like one of those feel-good Christmas stories you hear about when the hero of the story experiences a happy ending against all odds.

Truth be told, the 2010 Bucs team was something special. And the 2011 team had a chance to be something special, as well. After their week 9 matchup against the New Orleans Saints, the Bucs were 4-4. They weren't in the forefront of the playoff race, but they still had a chance at it. Their schedule was tough, but they showed all the signs of a team still in the fight, as Josh Freeman and LaGarrette Blount both had strong performances against the New Orleans Saints. Then, something happened: the team signed Albert Haynesworth.

Now, let's be clear about what this means. Haynesworth, more than any other defensive player I'm aware of, had a significant impact in his team's win-loss record during the regular season. The New England Patriots were 5-3 with him and 8-0 without him. So kudos to Bill Belichik for figuring it out. Raheem Morris, however, wasn't so lucky. After acquiring Haynesworth on waivers, the Bucs went 0-8, finishing out the season 4-12.

Part of the blame should rightfully go on Morris for starting Haynesworth (who had no sacks in 2011) in 6 games and playing him in another. However, that doesn't really tell the whole story. Blaming him for a team's ineffectiveness is easy to do because everywhere he's been, the team has not lived up to its true potential. The Redskins went 5-11 with him in 2010, and they went 4-12 with him in 2009. Since leaving the Tennessee Titans, Haynesworth has been bad news for every team he's been on.

Seen in this light, the Bucs' firing of Raheem Morris doesn't quite address the whole issue. As has already been pointed out, Chip Kelly isn't the first coaching candidate to decline the offer to coach. I believe this is because, in the NFL, not only do the coaches have to impress the team, but the team has to impress the coach. When coaches are hired and fired so often so to make the system resemble a revolving door, coaches often stay with a good thing while they have it. Steve Spurrier's foray into Washington and Bobby Petrino's year with the Atlanta Falcons just didn't work out. Pete Carroll, despite winning at everything at USC, has logged two losing seasons in Seattle thus far. Consequently, in the search for a head coach, the Bucs need to impress upon their coaching candidate the willingness of the organization to put forward a winning team. On the surface, it doesn't appear that this is the case.

Jon Gruden won a super bowl for the Bucs in 2002 (against his former team, the Oakland Raiders), but was fired after seven seasons. He posted a 9-7 record in his last year. He did so with Jeff Garcia and Brian Griese splitting time at quarterback. It should be noted here that the Cardinals went to the Super Bowl in 2008 after posting a 9-7 record that year; they won a lackluster NFC West and went on in the playoffs to defeat Atlanta, Carolina and Philadelphia. The team had a lead in the last two minutes of the game until Ben Roethlisberger drove down the field and threw the deciding touchdown to Plaxico Burress.

My purpose in mentioning this is to illustrate that a team which had a mediocre regular season can explode in the playoffs if they are coached correctly. This is currently what we've seen from the New York Giants, who have won three games on the road, just as they did in their Super Bowl winning year of 2007. Furthermore, in his first three years with the Giants, Tom Coughlin produced a 25-23 record, one of those seasons (his first in New York) being a 6-10 record. He visited the playoffs twice, but did not win a playoff game. The Mara family in New York stuck with Coughlin, however, and he has rewarded them with a second super bowl appearance in five years.

So, to answer my original question: why doesn't anyone want to coach for the Tampa Bay Bucs? It might simply be that the organization hasn't often shown a willingness to stick with a good thing through tough times, or, as in the case of the 2011 season, to recognize the many factors at work that prevented the team from reaching its full potential. Tampa Bay is a great sports town with a ton of potential on their NFL team, but unless the ownership is willing to stand pat and let things develop over time, the long-hoped for super bowl return won't happen for Bucs fan, or Bucs coaches.

Was Chip Kelly the best Bucs head coach of all time?

University of Oregon football coach Chip Kelly told a highly placed UO source late Sunday night that he has reversed course and decided to turn down an offer from the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The source told The Register-Guard earlier Sunday night that Kelly had reached an agreement to become Tampa Bay’s head coach. “It’s done,” the source said.

Just before midnight, Kelly changed his mind, telling the source: “I’m staying.”

A second UO source confirmed that Kelly is staying.

Kelly told one assistant coach Sunday night that he had been offered the Tampa Bay job, but Kelly told him he wasn’t certain what he would do.

A second UO source tells me Chip is staying.

BREAKING: Chip Kelly changes his mind, tells a highly placed UO source: "I'm staying."

Well, here I am being publicly humiliated if front of the greatest historical site Texas has to offer - The Alamo. This photo, for those that do not know, is repayment in full to Sander Philipse and the bet we had during the 2010 NFL season. I explained that we were not a very good team and would win 5 or fewer games. Sander, of course, had 6 or greater for his portion of the bet. If he had lost, we would possibly be looking at some kind of giant windmill in the background - or something to that effect.

FYI - I admit only to incorrectly guessing the amount of wins we would have in 2010. I still stand pat on my core belief that we completely sucked that season - despite the pretty 10-6 record. Damn...
