The Bucs have used Mike Evans' brand new contract to create cap space.

Mike Evans and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have agreed to a new restructured deal. A Mike Evans contract restructuring is not the most unusual thing for a Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offseason news cycle, however, for it to come so quickly after a new contract signing is slightly odd.

The ink has barely dried on Evans' new deal— Less than two weeks after the team and Evans came to agreement that will keep him in Tampa Bay for the next two seasons, the two sides have restructured that deal.

This is correct, though the new version of the Evans contract is what always made sense from a cap standpoint. Original was framed for non-cap accounting purposes, just in terms of whether money was paid out in 2023 league year vs. 2024. https://t.co/DrRDDuhVu4
— Greg Auman (@gregauman) March 17, 2024

The restructure has allowed Tampa to clear up just under $17.5 million in cap space, a considerable amount for Jason Licht and the front office to work with as the offseason progresses.

Questions about where the organization plans to spend the newfound money, can range from potential additions of outside talent (Many in the fanbase have been clamoring for a big-name edge rusher) to the prospect of negotiating long-term deals with some of their own talent.

Antoine Winfield Jr. is currently on the franchise tag. Tampa and their young franchise piece have been rumored to be moving toward a long-term contract since the beginning of this offseason.

Tristan Wirfs is also another name to consider for a new contract as he has outplayed his rookie deal, will be entering the final year of his contract this season, and has established himself as the team's cornerstone left tackle.

Regardless of Tampa's plans on how they will use their newly acquired cap space, Jason Licht and Mike Evans continue to put their high-quality working relationship on display.

Not everyone was happy. Shocker.

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL.
Bucs fans were hopeful quarterback Baker Mayfield would re-sign with Tampa Bay. However, despite the constant connections between both sides, the possibility of Mayfield hitting the open market was a fear the fanbase was dealing with.

Fortunately, the Bucs and their 28-year-old signal caller came to an agreement last week and there is now hope for the future as he will lead an offense that will also feature wide receiver Mike Evans who was also re-signed.

In this week’s SB Nation Reacts poll, we asked Bucs fans to grade the re-signing of Mayfield. The majority obviously liked the move to bring him back, but there are always those that will just never be happy.

Bucs Trade their CB1

Bringing back their own wasn’t the only thing the Buccaneers were working on during the start of free agency.

The team made a deal to send cornerback Carlton Davis III to the Detroit Lions — a move that cleared up space to give them room to sign their own along with others. Oh, and they also gained a third round pick in the exchange.

We wanted to ask fans this week about this move, too. There were many, many that agreed with the decision to trade Davis.

The Bucs agreed to terms with CB Bryce Hall, bring back QB John Wolford, and bring in two offensive linemen

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were busy on Friday after a quiet Thursday, agreeing to terms with multiple players at positions of need.

After signing Jordan Whitehead to a two-year deal, the Bucs also agreed to terms with his New York Jets teammate Bryce Hall on a one year deal. Hall, who could compete for the starting slot corner job but at the very least provide much needed depth at corner as well as special teams contributions, has seen his playing time drop dramatically over the last few seasons. After playing more than 90% of defensive snaps in his first two seasons his defensive snap count dropped to just 5% in 2022 and 22% in 2023. However, he took more than 45% of special teams snaps over the last two seasons. In a very crowded and extremely talented cornerback room in New York, Hall’s opportunities were limited.

Now, Hall gets the chance to revitalize his career with the potential of being the slot corner in 2024 - especially if the Bucs want to move Christian Izien back to safety to address the razor thin depth there.

In addition to the signing of Hall, the Bucs seem to be setting up for a competition at guard between two players out of the NFC East. Ben Bredeson, formerly of the New York Giants, and Sua Opeta, formerly of the Philadelphia Eagles, both agreed to one year deals with the Bucs on Friday afternoon. Last year’s starting left guard down the stretch, Aaron Stinnie, has moved on with a deal with the New York Giants leaving the Bucs’ offensive line depth even thinner.

Bredeson started in 16 games for the Giants last season and 24 games over the last two years. After being a fourth-round pick by the Baltimore Ravens out of the University of Michigan in 2020, Bredeson moved on to the Giants in his second season, starting just one game before getting the chance to start eight games in 2022. At 6’5”, 330lbs, Bredeson is a big body that the Bucs desperately need and he is expected to compete for the starting guard and the starting center jobs - though having only played guard at the NFL level I would expected that Todd Bowles wants him to stay there while leaving Robert Hainsey at center.

Opeta seems more like the Stinnie replacement and will likely be in a backup role. He also entered the league in 2020 and has been with the Eagles the entire time. He has experience at both tackle and guard, so Opeta quickly becomes a versatile depth piece that can play across the line if needed. He’s started just ten games over his four year career.

Finally, the Buccaneers are bringing back quarterback John Wolford to round out the quarterback room. Wolford, who played with Baker Mayfield in Los Angeles as well as for Liam Coen when there, returns for his second season with Tampa Bay to join Mayfield and Kyle Trask. Wolford’s return also set up the best signing announcement so far in this year’s free agency;

The veteran safety didn’t have to slide into anyone’s DMs to gain attention.

The Buccaneers drafted Jordan Whitehead in the fourth round of the 2018 draft out of Pitt. He quickly became a fan favorite in just a few years and was part of the Bucs Super Bowl LV run where he forced a Packers turnover in the NFC Championship in route to a 31-26 victory.

When he left to sign with the New York Jets during the 2022 offseason, a void was instantly felt in the defensive backfield. But after two seasons away from Tampa Bay, Whitehead has now returned back to the team that drafted him. And he made sure it was going to be that way when he began, essentially, selling himself on social media.

Whitehead was a guest on Ronnie & Tkras on 95.3 WDAE after signing his new deal with the Bucs Thursday. When Tom “TKras” Krasniqi asked the Bucs safety about the series of posts he posted on X (Twitter) of his highlights throughout his career — mainly while with the Bucs, Whitehead initially danced around the question saying he wasn’t trying to be a troll. But when pressed again about it, the 26-year-old replied with what we were expecting.

“I definitely wanted to come [back to Tampa],” Whitehead said as he chuckled. “Nowadays social media is so big that I knew it would get some attention. I knew it would get back to the Bucs.”

And so as both Ronnie & TKras said to him, he knew what he was doing. Surely he and the team are both thankful that he did.

Whitehead is coming off a career high four interception season - having three of those four come in week one against Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills. Whitehead always excelled most under Todd Bowles and now gets a chance to shine in that defense once again.

Whitehead spent the first four years of his career with the Bucs before spending the last two with the Jets, and in that time under Todd Bowles Whitehead was a weapon for the defense. He played in 59 games, amassing 292 tackles, 25 passes defensed, five interceptions, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and two sacks.

Now, as the plug-and-play starter opposite Winfield Jr., the Bucs have checked off another off-season box and addressed a position that struggled mightily last season with Ryan Neal.

And while Whitehead has worn four different numbers over the course of his career, it’s worth noting that his number from last season - number 3 - is available to wear with the Bucs this coming season.

The Buccaneers continue prioritizing taking care of their own.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a clear plan entering the 2024 offseason, to take care of their own. The Bucs had crucial pieces across their offense, defense, and special teams that needed to be retained. Jason Licht put on his hard hat and got to work.

Tampa's top three free agents were brought back before legal tampering even began. The Buccaneers quickly shifted focus to second-level priorities— Re-signing their revelation at kicker, maintaining their running back depth, and have now officially crossed of the list 'Bring back future Ring of Honor member Lavonte David.'

In a move that was surprsing to nobody—but relieving for all— The Buccaneers came to an agreement with their long tenured linebacker. The deal is a one-year contract worth up to $10 million (representing a pay increase from what David made last year). Lavonte David will be entering his 13th professional season— each of his first 12 have been excellent. David is undoubtedly one of best players in the franchise's history and has been so on miserably poor teams, as well as elite teams.

Ask any group of Buccaneers’ fans and one of the few things that will never be disputed is the fact that Lavonte David should retire as a Buccaneer. Each year Jason Licht and the Bucs work out a new deal for David is one year closer to making that hope a reality. This contract puts Lavonte David another step closer to riding off into the Central Florida sunset.

Follow along for the latest regarding players the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are interested in - or free agents the Bucs are losing

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have already checked three major things off their to do list. They signed Mike Evans to a two year, $52 million dollar deal to keep him in Tampa. Antoine Winfield Jr. got the franchise tag with the expectation of getting a long term deal done. Then, on the eve of teams being able to speak with pending free agents, the Bucs locked up Baker Mayfield on a three year, $100 million dollar deal with $50 million guaranteed. Now, their eyes turn to the open market in hopes of improving their roster from last year.

Two players many will be watching are Lavonte David - who many expect to return and finish his career as a Buc - as well as Devin White. White seems to be on his way out and may very well be one of the first players scooped up when free agency begins. David, on the other hand, may take a few days to see what’s out there because while he has said he wants to stay in Tampa he’s also open to other options.

A lot of Bucs fans are hoping to see a reunion with Jordan Whitehead to come back and be the starting safety opposite of Winfield - and with the influx of safeties now hitting the market they may be able to bring him in at a reasonable price.
