The Tampa Bay Buccaneers must be happy with their second second-round pick today: kicker Roberto Aguayo has been named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week, after hitting four field goals and an extra point against the Kansas City Chiefs, missing nothing, being perfect on kickoffs and thus scoring 13 of the team’s 17 points.
That’s a pretty impressive number for a kicker, though all of his kicks were from within 42 yards. His performance was as much a result of a failure of the team’s red zone effort as it was of his accurate kicking, but that shouldn’t take away too much glory: just a month ago we were talking about potentially cutting him because he was doing so badly on kicks.
So good on Aguayo, who can now boast his first award of his young career. Hopefully this game was a sign of things to come instead of a mirage caused by a whole lot of short kicks.
