I've done some research, slept on it and had an epiphany of sorts about Charles Sims. Maybe the RB cupboard is a lot more bare than we think. Every Buc fan on here was pulling their hair out last year (including me) when ANOTHER seemingly solid RB went down after an injury and Tampa's backfield was left without another RB. The other very CLEAR thing I was thinking about that has stood out to me even in the last 3 or 4 years in watching Tampa's O is other than a screen pass every now and again, Tampa has really lacked a RB who had Charles Sims' type of skill set as a runner and receiver. Drops and missed passes or even giving up on passes thrown at the RBs has plagued the Tampa backfield all the way back to Blount's stone hand days. Lovie and most importantly our new OC Jeff Tedford saw a need for an upgrade.
Jeff Tedford is about as innovative a play caller and designer as they come these days and the RB always played a huge role as well as the in-line TE that can get out in space and catch passes. Charles Sims has a very unique blend of speed, quickness, and playmaking ability to add to him being the best receiving back in this draft, which is the reason WVU took his transfer after he had graduated from Houston. As a runner, he is a one-cut penetrator that has explosive ability in a zone blocking scheme where he can read and react to a hole opening off blocks. The biggest asset he gives Tampa's new offense under Tedford though is receiving skill. He reminds me more of a taller Dexter McCluster (who played more of a RB role at Ole Miss simply because they ran the ball A LOT under Nutt and took on more of an offensive cog piece for KC once he was drafted) but the obvious huge difference is Sims has a lot more size and can use it as a RB. He gets upfield in a hurry and his running style is a perfect back-up compliment to Dougie and there was no one else on the roster like that.
I feel a lot more comfortable with the pick than I did yesterday for the simple fact that I trust Tedford and what he can use Sims for. He wants pieces in this offense that can be serious mismatch problems and he got 3 in the first 2 days of the draft. Could Lovie and Licht have gone inside OL? Sure and Gabe Jackson would've been a nice get there but we still don't know what OL will be available for them to take Day 3 and like someone else mentioned, Carl Nicks was a 5th rd pick and inside OL have been sliding down so I still believe they have one targeted. Let's wait till the end and see the draft class as a whole.
As for Sims I'm all for the pick and welcome him as a Tampa Bay Buccaneer!!
