So I was watching clips from his interview he did on ESPN First Take about different players in the draft and came away with some interesting thoughts on Jadeveon Clowney vs Khalil Mack:
1. Jadeveon Clowney is athletic but lacks any football skills or determination - He made some good points talking about his ridiculous 40 yd dash time and how you never saw that translate to the field in his play. Also mentions how there were games like against Florida (I game I watched this year) where he was totally taken out of the game early on with doubles and TEs chipping and he lacked the passion to fight through and the only plays he made were when he was unblocked on a couple different occasions. Hoge said he never saw him play as fast or consistent as he tested athletically and it would disturb him if he was a GM or coach because you can't teach heart, desire, passion, or commitment and he seems to lack all of those qualities. Then he breaks down his football skillset and points out a few of the things you can clearly see with Clowney but he says the thing that disturbed him the most is how undisciplined he is. Explains because he stands so high off snap he gets driven off the ball by most technical blockers and as soon as his initial move doesn't work he quits. When you transition him to the NFL his football skillset is very poor, his work ethic is very poor, his commitment and passion to playing the game is very poor. Is he amazing athletically? absolutely but you always seem disappointed watching his tape. Interesting take I thought
2. Khalil Mack smokes Clowney in every phase of a football skillset. The Buffalo OLB should warrant consideration as the #1 overall pick and Hoge says he's the best defensive prospect he's ever seen in the 15 years he's been doing evals right above Patrick Willis. His football skillset is superior to anyone defensively Hoge says he's seen in 15 years. He is just as comfortable inside as he is outside where he can whip anyone anywhere at any time as a pass rusher. Buffalo put him at DE and he was better than Clowney at DE. Interesting...Tampa sure does need an OLB with that skillset, I made a Fanpost a long time ago considering taking Mack I believe and the couple games I watched a couple things Hoge mentioned did stand out sounds like possibly a Derrick Thomas type game changer as an outside rusher.
Maybe if Watkins and the 3 QBs are gone as well as Clowney and a trade down isn't available I'd be the first one to welcome Tampa drafting this guy.
