Our QB situation has been... polarizing for quite some time now. I felt the need to write this fan post after reading dozens of comments from disapproving fans. McCown is not our long term answer. He's 35, this is obvious. Admittedly, he does not even represent a clear upgrade over QB Mike Glennon. (One can make the argument but let's save that for now.) McCown allows the Bucs to regard the position the way we should have from the beginning! The way our former coach refused to. Despite some recent success stories, no QB should have to come into the league and start. Certainly not a 3rd (or 4th) round prospect. Rookie QB's should be afforded the opportunity to sit and learn. Our former coach's refusal to either a) let Freeman play out the entire year or b) cut him in the off season and sign a different vet, robbed Glennon of that chance.
Now we will have a QB with experience. Someone who can command a huddle full of guys that are new to one another. Someone who has no delusions of grandeur, and will accept his role as a mentor. Glennon and our inevitably drafted QB will be able to compete in training camp, in the preseason, and throughout practice next season. I do not foresee Glennon being cut and I would not be surprised to see McCown, Glennon, our draft pick and perhaps even Kafka all on our roster come week 1. By next season we should have a clear favorite, and may even have the opportunity to add yet another young QB.
Quarterback play has been a thorn in Lovie's side for most of his career and I don't doubt he will leave no stone unturned. Maybe Glennon wins the starting job this summer. Maybe he does get traded away. Either way I believe it is shortsighted to look at this signing as a mistake.
